DS is looking at summer programs for this year. He's currently a junior so whatever program he goes to will be important for producing pieces for his portfolio. He did MassArt's last summer as a commuter and really liked it but wants to try living away from home this time. Currently considering RISD & Tyler - both schools are on his "probably will apply to" list for next year. Does not want to go to NYC. Any feedback on either of these programs or other ideas is appreciated.

I would take a look at MICA. I have worked with several students who have attended their precollege program and they were able to push their vision and add significantly to their portfolios.

My S did pre-college at his number 1 choice school and got accepted to his number 1 as well as others. Is there a correlation? I don’t know but that’s how I would do it if I were again.

My D did the Portfolio Boot Camp at Tyler for 2 weeks the summer before her senior year. She had quite a few nice drawings to use in her portfolio.

The housing is not on the Temple campus. She stayed at UPenn and they provided transport to Tyler. They house students from many different summer programs & internships, so she got to meet a lot of different people. She liked all the activities and getting to explore Philly.

This program helped confirm that Temple was her top choice & she is currently a freshman at Tyler.

I attended RISD Precollege and I have to say it was a great experience. Definitely felt more prepared for college after it and I go to RISD now. If you work hard, you’ll have a chance to make good friends, make great work, and have awesome experiences. It inspired me to attend art school because I had so much fun. It gives you a chance to be independent and every college I told that I went was really impressed. I had a lot of work from that summer in my portfolio and they offer RISD admission portfolio reviews before you leave that give you great tips when you apply. I also had one of my teachers write me a recommendation. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Check out Cranbrook Academy of Art’s summer programs: [Cranbrookart.edu/Summer Institute/Class Descriptions](<a href=“Summer Powell | Cranbrook Academy of Art”>http://www.cranbrookart.edu/Pages/SummerInstitute.html). CAA only has a graduate program, though, so it wouldn’t give him an “in” for the school … although CAA grads teach at all the top undergrad art schools.
