Hello everyone

Is it easy to have performance opportunities in Michigan ? I have the possibily to take a master degree in Piano at Central Michigan University. I'm from Portugal and what I'm looking in USA is to have more opportunities to play and show my work. I know that churches are a good place to start looking for it.

Other question. For example, University of Michigan is in Ann Arbor. Is it possible to play in that city even if I am from a different university?

Thanks

There are a ton of piano performance majors at UM in Ann Arbor, so they tend to snap up the available gigs, but know that church jobs, for keyboard players, usually are taken by full time music directors at the churches. That doesn’t mean that you can’t find a place, you just have to look diligently. Remember that the state isn’t a big hub of activity and that as an EU resident, you are not going to be allowed to work in the US unless arrangements are made through your school’s International Student office (and paying jobs are usually restricted to on-campus positions).

To be honest, being at Central Michigan won’t make things easy for you to perform a lot. Mount Pleasant is really isolated, and there aren’t many particularly busy areas nearby. Detroit and Ann Arbor aren’t out of the question, but they both have their own performers clamoring for chances to play.
