Michigan NCAA Hoops

Impressive today over VCU! Wow! If they can keep playing like that.....

definitely… mitch mcgary was the real deal today.

Potential draft stock shot up for pretty much anyone not named Trey Burke today. I was especially impressed with Tim Hardaway’s big shots and his and Spike Albrecht’s handling. And of course, as one of my friends put it, Mitch McGary “evolved to Charizard” today!

Bigdoglover - That’s how we do it! Felt bad for Mitch. The CBS ‘round table’ guys (not charles and not greg) kept referring to him as McQuery! Ah - No. He’s not the Penn State coach…

laurendog, nevermind Angelo’s, I’ll meet you at the final four in Atlanta!

I saw Spike Albrecht play twice in high school. He played at the absolute highest level with all D1 players but he was so small and nothing special. I heard he was going to Michigan and thought really…is he good enough for that level. I guess he showed me, played great - and as a freshmen!!! Wow!

Let us not get carried away guys. We still have to beat a couple of good teams (probably KU and Florida) before we make it to the Final Four. Still, today’s win over a 5th seed was impressive. The future looks very bright for this team, which is the youngest team in the tournament.

Come on Alexandre its okay to get a little carried away. They haven’t played like this in a long time.

It is fine to get carried away. The big win feels that much better with how ga ga the “experts” were going over VCU and their apparently patented “Havoc” defense. Well I’m going ha ha. Let’s hope the fun continues in Arlington. Any one going down there?

Great win, great team play. Great move by Coach B to take the ball out of Trey Burke’s hands, not only because VCU was going to be keying on him, but because tMichigan actually had better ball distribution than they’ve had in the last few weeks. I love Trey’s talent and heart, and there’s a lot to love about his skill level and his game, but I actually thought Michigan’s offense became sporadic and sometimes one-dimensional about midway through the season. My perception was that Trey started to buy into his press clippings and all the national hype, and decided he had to be Superman and superstar because that’s how people were describing him–and because his NBA draft stock depended on it. His assists went down, his shots went up, he started forcing some things that just weren’t there (especially late in close games). And the more he scored the more individual accolades he got, but the more inconsistent Michigan became as a team, losing 5 of their last 10 regular season games. He’s a much better player, and Michigan’s a much better team, when he’s looking to run the offense and distribute rather than to score. And for that matter, when he’s willing to let other guys get the assist by making the pass that sets up the play, rather than trying to force the pass that gets the assist. He’ll get his scoring chances in that offense, and he’ll get plenty of assists–he just needs to play more unselfishly than he did in the latter part of the season.

Today, more players were involved in a team effort to break VCU’s press, resulting in a lot of fast break opportunities and open looks. Burke’s stat line wasn’t bad–18 points, 7 assists, right around his season averages. But what jumps out at me is that the rest of the team had 10 assists, more than they’ve been getting lately, because they moved the ball around and weren’t just waiting for Trey Burke, superstar, to make something happen. If they keep playing like that, they could make a deep run.

If only Burke, Robinson III, Hardaway Jr. and McGary can play this ways for the next 4 games…!

bclintock,

I think you really nailed it - all right on. Burke is great but he has a lot of help and needs to use it.

This may have to be the year becasue Burke and Hardaway will be gone to the NBA and who knows who else…

Hopefully, Hardaway will stay another year. I think he is 50/50. Burke is most likely gone, but look at Lewan. Sometimes, star athletes decide to stay on for whatever reason. But with the caliber of player coming into the program, this will remain a strong team for a while. With Burke and Hardaway gone, 2014 will be a down year, but 2015 would be strong again.

Go Bucks! What a clutch play down the stretch. Now I need to go gargle with Listerine!

By the way - no need to be impressed with Kansas today - as posted on ESPN:

“UNC didnt beat a team this season which won a Round of 64 game in the NCAA Tournament (0-8 vs Butler, Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Miami)”
