Can anyone give me info about the band, culture, level of seriousness. I have seen a number of youtube videos with their Gaga theme and they look great. Really great. Their website talks about auditions and the specific instrumentation of the band - from that, I would assume the auditions are pretty competitive and not everyone makes the band. Is that true? Any info people have would be appreciated. Thanks!

Michigan Marching band is really competitive and is a very serious deal that typically takes more than 2 hours each day for practice, etc. However, the band culture is really close-knit. All interested students must audition. If your a freshman you’ll need to audition during your orientation, and of course not all students make it.

audition - [University of Michigan Marching Band](http://mmb.music.umich.edu/joinTheBand/theaudition.asp)

Any other info out there? From the looks on the youtube videos, they have a practice blacktop (as opposed to a field) - is that on north or where?

It’s on South, and is called Elbel Field, named after the composer of “The Victors.” It is near a dedicated marching band building (Revelli Hall) and close to the stadium.

BTW, what instrument? I am deferred right now, but if I get in I plan on being in the drumline.

I’m asking for my ds, alto sax. Having a great marching band was a key requirement when he selected schools. Right now Michigan is tied with PSU on the band front with Michigan having an edge of course on academics. Have alot more info on PSU’s band, visited the band bldg, met staff - Michigan we didn’t have a chance to see anyone from the band though actually the PSU staff spoke very highly of them (which showed a lot of class I think)

You or your ds should contact the band staff (there should be info on the website). Michigan and Penn State band-wise have a lot in common, and either would be a great choice.

Hopefully we shall be playing “The Victors” (a lot) together. GO BLUE!!!
