Microbiology, neuroscience, biochemistry

Hey does anyone know the difficulty of majors like microbiology, neuroscience, and biochemistry? Specifically at ohio state university, case western, university of Rochester, and northeastern??

Thanks

Compared to what? They aren’t physics or engineering, but they play in the STEM league, so they aren’t exactly elementary education either. No school with a competitive program will be easier than any other.

If you’re concerned about how hard they are, that’s good because you will have to work your butt off. If you don’t like working that hard, there are lots of other majors at these schools. If you’re afraid of how hard they might be, major in something else. They’re just as hard at other schools. The curricula are pretty much the same within each major. The students you’re taking the courses with are pretty much the same (largely) pre-meds, some of whom will cut your throat to get a higher grade or see you get a lower one. The curricula are very competitive and bring out the best and worst in students.

I’m willing to work hard so working is not an issue, but I was just wondering like what the average gpa would be in each major… Nevertheless thanks for the responses!

That’s hard to predict, and it depends a lot on your own personal strengths. (For example, I know plenty of engineering majors who would find an English major WAY harder than their choice of engineering.) That said, I am a neuroscience major at Northeastern. All 3 of those majors require a similar skill set, though neuro has a psych component to it. I’ve found the course load to be manageable, with options to push yourself if you want. For example, I took a graduate-level functional human neuroanatomy course my sophomore year.

Thanks for the repsonses, nanotechnology I personally find psychology classes easy, would you say neuroscience at northeastern has more of a biology emphasis or a psychology emphasis??

One of the reasons I picked Northeastern is that a lot of programs I looked at seemed at lot like a bio program plus some neuro stuff, whereas Northeastern’s included more psych. (Like you, I got interested because of my high school psych classes - IB Psychology for me.) The curriculum has changed since I started, but it still includes more psych than many neuro programs. The program requirements are on page 299 of the course catalog here: http://www.northeastern.edu/registrar/courses/cat1415.pdf

And it might also be worth checking out the program’s website: <a href=“Behavioral Neuroscience - Northeastern University College of Science”>http://www.northeastern.edu/bns/
