Midd 2013 apps down (so far in count)

Financial aid: the College will adjust the family contribution as well as the academic year work expectation for students receiving financial aid. These changes will be phased in one year at a time, beginning with the class of 2013. Current students will not be affected by this change.

Uh oh. I don't like the sound of that at all.

No more freshman orientation camping trips, either...!

Since Midd doesn't offer any merit aid a substantial number of families that were originally up for paying sticker price a year ago, with the current uncertainty and hit to portfolios and home values, will guide their kids privates that will offer a 50 to 80k discount over 4 years.

What they will try to do is get more students who pay full tuition who also have parents that don't want their children's experience to be hurt and will ultimately donate larger sums to the endowment. This is exactly what led to the explosion in endowments at other institutions.

Personally, I like how open they are at least proporting to be and I frankly, I don't understand finance all that well to see any holes in what they put forth.

I am bummed about the freshman trips, but I also think Middlebury is in such a beautiful area, there will be other alternatives that end up being equally rewarding. After all, the most often cited thing about those trips is the people whom you end up bonding with.

Truth is it's the upper classmen who face the most change because of cuts. They will see parts of the campus limit access for parts of the day, the social life might change (what there is of it in such a rural location), etc. For some sophomores and most certainly the freshmen, any implemented changes won't seem so overly harsh because they never knew the difference

Yeah, this seems to be what Midd was doing by accepting nearly half their class ED1, since most ED apps aren't looking for financial aid. Looks like no more need-blind admissions at Midd!
