Although a final number isn't yet available, I've just heard through the grapevine that Middlebury received more than 8,000 applications for the class of 2014--a new record. Good luck to all prospective students!

Whoa… I will be anxious to see the official number because last year was just under 7000. That’d be a huge increase in my mind. Obviously not having an additional essay was a gamble - you had reduced numbers of admission’s counselors available due to budget cuts, then make a decision to cut out the extra essay. The results are having to read an additional 1000 applications where distinction in qualifications are negligible to a certain degree. Do not envy that job.

There were almost 8000 apps for the class entering in the fall of 2008. Last year, Midd’s apps were down almost 1000 for some reason, to just below 7000. Looks like they’re back up this year.

Wow :o that’s a lot of applications to read.

The earlier decline by what appeared to be 1000 was due to not including, for the first time, apps that were partially completed. That is, when the College received 7800 apps two app cycles ago, it included incomplete apps. The apparent decline last year, was because Middlebury only included fully completed apps for the first time. The result was that the number of read applications (considered) was virtually identical last year to the prior year, despite the decline in the number reported. This year, the 8000 apps are fully completed apps and indeed represent a near 16% increase over last year, which is a surprise (even considering the elimination of the essay).

The increase can be attributed to the fact that Middelbury required no supplementary essays and all this time.

Also the fact that it was ranked #4 in last year’s USNews.

Well, we can add to that the fact that Midd is finally being given the recognition that it has so long deserved as one of the nation’s top institutions.

And one has to wonder if they will bring back the supplemental essay next year!! But I would imagine that (even allowing for waived application fees) the additional revenue from an uptick in application fees is very welcome!

Yeah especially after what happened last year.
