I got into both Middlebury and UC Irvine's College Honors Program (CHP), and I really don't know which one to go to! Middlebury would cost me about $10,000 more than UCI and is very far away from my family. I know that Middlebury offers smaller class sizes, good quality of life, personal attention and state-of-the-art facilities, but UC Irvine says that CHP offers these liberal arts college-traits as well. Middlebury is a "feeder" school to grad schools, but I've heard that UCI's CHP more or less is a "feeder" program too.

My intended major is Psychology, and I want to minor in music. I also want to study French and art, and I want to go to medical school after undergrad. :]

Please, any input would be greatly appreciated!

I’m only responding to this because I noticed no one else had. I honestly know nothing about the CHP program at UCI. My father did part of his Med school internship at UCI though, so I’m mildly familiar with the campus and the school. I can say that the campus not what I imagined when I imagined attending college (that’s not to say it wouldn’t be for everyone).

I can just about guarantee you that in terms of attending med school, Midd will offer you a leg up over UCICHP. If you want to study French you’d be hard pressed to find ANYWHERE better than Midd. I majored in art history and found the opportunities and professors there fantastic. With the possible exception of Williams, you’d be hard pressed to find any school this size that would have a significantly better program.

Ultimately, the schools are VERY different and you’ll have to go with your gut, but I definitely had a great experience there and know every single one of my friends did as well.

Middlebury is a fantastic school, but if finances and being close to home are going to be a concern, the honors program at UCI is certainly worth a look. My friends there are more than satisfied with what the program offer them. They like the fact that due to priority enrollment, they are pretty insulated from the class and funding cuts the UC’s are going through right now. They also like paying public school tuition.

If you are indeed going to medical school after graduation, UCI could end up being a great deal.

For 10,000$, I think Midd would get you further on your path, plus you’d really get to shine on the smaller campus in the Arts and Languages. Their Med School acceptance rate is higher because they put a lot of effort into prepping candidates, and their resources are greater. my S is only 5 hours away by car, but having so much fun he didn’t come home except at break anyway!

Thanks for all of the feedback, everyone! I sent out my SIR to Middlebury a few days ago. I hope - and I’m quite sure that - I’ll love it there. I’m working more now to help pay the tuition any way I can. Thank you all so much!
