Midwest Premed

Hi guys! I’m looking for suggestions of where to apply this fall, as I am an HS junior. I’m not looking for the best U I can get into, for I’d rather go to a respected but less competitive institution where my ability to work hard will more easily prove itself.
Stats: 35 ACT, 4.25 W, 4.00 UW (expected 4.4 gpa upon graduation.) wide and unique range of ECs.

Would like a school that’s a decent mix of Greek life and non, as I’m undecided of my personal preference there. Midwest area is preferable. Financial aid will be a strong factor. I’m pretty much set on the PreMed track and would perfer to be in a strong Honors program at a slightly less competitive school overall, but I’m open to others.

Currently looking at UWMadison (I’m a WI resident, this is the only state school I’d consider but it’s a strong choice)
MN twin cities
Miami Ohio
OSU
Northwestern (but likely won’t attend)
NC Chapel Hill

Please weigh in on premed and honors programs, suggest other school, etc. thanks!

Have you considered the many good LACs in the Midwest: excellent academics, fine reputations, long-established pre-med success paths, considerable FA (including merit), good social life with balanced Greek affiliation, and much more? A big university isn’t axiomatically a better option than a small/mid-sized LAC.

Is your family low income? If so UNC is a good choice. You may want to have Alabama on your list with their excellent merit aid. @mom2collegekids‌ has a son who is now in med school out of there.

I have but generally I’ve been advised against it mostly for lack of research opportunities. Any specific ones I should look into?

Bradley might be a good choice. Here is a link to their page on the chem and biochem major, where they explain that 80% of students participate in one on one research projects with profs. http://www.bradley.edu/academic/departments/chemistry/why/

Carleton, Macalester, Grinnell

Check Creighton University. You may get merit scholarship there and their premed program is very supportive.

@shakespearedoc put UA on your list. Your high stats will get you a lot of places, but some of your comments would have you be able to take advantage of a lot of things at UA. Look over the UA web site and CC thread. @mom2collegekids can give you a lot of info about UA and med track (her son is a UA eng graduate and currently in his 2nd year of med school). My DD is a freshman eng student at UA also in honors college and doing STEM MBA honors program (stats not quite as high as yours, but has Presidential and Engineering Scholarships, Million Dollar Band and Concert Band scholarships). She loves it at UA. You can save $$ for med school. However your high stats may have you get a very high award at a very selective school - so I would also encourage you to look around to apply to the types of other schools too. H and I are both from WI  PM if interested in more Q and A. I have worked for two universities.
