Might Have Made a Mistake on FAFSA

When I filled out my FAFSA application I was told putting that you’re going to live off-campus will give you the most amount of money, but now that I’ve gotten accepted into UC Santa Cruz and have gotten my estimated cost of how much I’ll be needing to pay it says that it based off of me living off-campus. I don’t know how to change my status from living off-campus to living on campus. I also don’t know if that will change the amount I will be expected to pay. So I really need help figuring that out because I don’t know what to do since we’re no longer at school to get help from counselors because of COVID-19 and I’m a 1st gen so I can’t ask my parents or sibling for help.

Call the college to ask how to update the form. Living on campus will change the cost, so that will affect the amount of aid you’re offered.

Some schools have a different cost of living amount for on campus and off campus, but they may not be that different. Some schools (Michigan) have the same cost built into the COA for all living situations so it makes no difference at all.

It will really only make a big difference if the school meets full need and will give you a big grant for living on or off campus.

Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! I tried to call but because of the COVID-19 their operators are closed indefinitely so I need to email them which sucks because I have to wait 5 business days for a response
