Military, do I have a chance in Midd?

Good Morning/Evening all,

I just had a 'few' questions about the Middlebury experience and acceptance.

I have spent the last 6 years in the military, and because of marriages (yes that's plural), deployments, and just general ill timing for schooling, my grades and few classes I have taken, have been quite poor.
a. Will acceptance into a Language program (specifically Russian, and I am willing to do the pledge thing) be hard? If so what are some things I can do to improve my chances in the last year I have with the military?
b. I have a GED, will this impact my chances? I have to assume it will.
c. Do other prior service fair well here, in the school in general, and in the language programs?

If I do get accepted, what can I expect from the Mid Life? Language pledge and all?
a. I have done a small portion of the Rosetta Stone: Russian while I was in Afghan last, should I just toss it?
b. For the language pledge, are beginners beaten with a stick, or is there some lienency on the pledge thing?
c. How is general life on and off campus? Crime? Do I need to brush up on my MACP? Are people generally kind?
d. I'm short (5'4"), am I gonna catch hell 24/7 because of it? (This is a joke, because I know I am going too, and I am used to it already anyway :).)

I have a small family (daughter, wife, and son on the way), should I plan on being on a technical deployment with few contacts, and family living far; or will I be able to remain in touch?

More to follow, my train of thought has just crashed and burned; mainly because it is now lunch time and there is food in front of me.

Thanks for answering what you can!

Please clarify. Are you asking about applying and enrolling as a full-time undergraduate majoring in Russian, or applying for and enrolling in the Russian summer language school?

I believe just applying for and enrolling in the Russian Summer Language school. I’d love to do full-time, but I am not sure how plausible that will be for me and my Family. I think i’ll start the Summer program and if I find I am able to juggle the two, I will serisouy consider going full time.

OK; there’s a huge difference between being a full-time undergraduate student at Middlebury and being a summer language student. As far as your questions go, other than the following, everything I would tell you would be off of the summer language school web site: [Middlebury Language Schools | Middlebury](http://www.middlebury.edu/ls)

The crime rate at Middlebury is very low. Hey, it’s small town Vermont. People are generally kind and very helpful, but there can also sometimes be that stand-offishness towards strangers that’s representative of old-time yankee culture. I don’t know why people would make fun of you for being 5’4". That’s really not that short.
