Milkshake & CALARTS

Just wanted to let everyone know that me and my daughter visited CALARTS this past week and had the pleasure of meeting Milkshakespeare who I believe everyone that has been on CC for sometime knows.

Just to confirm she is every bit and more as intelligent, kind, and mature as she portrays on CC. Me and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her and her mom who looked like she could have been a student:):):)

AS for CALARTS here is what we found out and observed:

CALARTS was in a suburban area in Valencia, CA. There was a mall down the street and lots of places to eat etc.

The application is currently online and they will be auditioning in Chicago at the Palmer House(They have a room there but are not part of Unifieds) and they will also be in New York. They encourage applicants to try to audition on campus if possinle so that you can see the program, sit in on a class if possible, etc. Since we have already visited auditioning off campus is a good option for us because Admissions has aleady met my daughter.

Prefferred deadline is 12/03/2013

1450 students/950 undergrads

Make sure you have a third monologue ready even though the requirements ask for two.

Monlogues are contrasting but do not have to be dramatic/comedic they just need to be contrasting in some way.

Once you have your application and statement completed you can contact admissions for an audition date.

They do not require SAT or ACT scores.

They are looking for natural responses when you audition not a staged performer.

BFA is a total of 122 credit hours/48 of these are critical studies.

MTTRF you are in your Voice/Movement/Speech/Acting studio classes

Wed you are in your critical studies classes (1 or 2 of these)

They take approximately 36 students that are broken up into three groups of aprox 12 students who are in an ensemble together.

They are looking for male and females and do not have any set preferences.

Average class size is 20 or less.

Classes run Mon - Fri from aprox 9am-5pm

Rehearsal's are Mon-Fri from aprox 7pm - 11 pm

You have class on Saturday's for four hours which vary.

Personal thoughts:
CALARTS seemed to be a very small school on a small campus in a nice area

The building's and facilities will not wow you, however, everyone seemed to know each other and we were there on the second day after most of the freshman just moved in. Almost everyone we passed said hello to MKSP and we met several of her newfriends from all over the US and the world; Turkey, NC, Jersey...All of the students we met were very friendly towards my daughter and made her feel very welcome. One thing we also noticed was that everyone of them were able to tell us why they picked Calarts. One girl knew nothing about it until she auditioned at Unified's and then after meeting the head of the program at Unified's knew that is where she wanted to go.

The students we saw ourselves were culturally diverse and the acting students were all sorts of sizes, shapes, and ethnicities.

It is a very expensive school and they do not have alot of aide. We were told aprox $50,000 - $55,000 a year with scholarships around $6,000 - $8,000.

Strong relationship with Disney.

One of the best animation schools in the country and the students from the animation dept. like to use the actors from the drama dept for voiceover if they are interested.

They work with the Film department which is also well known mostly for Indie style films.

What we took away is that they are more of a contemporary and experimental type program and are looking for actors who have a voice, are creative, and unique, not cookie cutter polished staged performers.

I hope this helps anyone who is interested or thinking of applying Please make sure to check all of my information on dates, numbers, etc. with the admissions department. I tried to take as many notes as possible and provide as much information as it was given to me.

I will start a thread on the other schools we visited shortly.

This is so detailed and interesting–thank you, Threed! And good luck to you and your daughter as you start your odyssey! :)

You rock Threed. Enjoy the rest of your trip!
