Mills College (CA) ? Anyone?

Can anyone tell me about Mills College in CA?

I actually live in the north bay, but have never really heard a much about Mills. I know it's in Oakland.. the only thing I know about Oakland is they have poverty and homocide issues.. can anyone tell me some good/bad things they know about Mills? Is it a worth while college to apply to?

If you're close, go visit. It has some advantages and disadvantages, the ones that go along with the average liberal arts college. Small classes, high teacher faculty interaction, less course selection (although you can take classes at Berkeley under most circumstances, and there is a shuttle bus). They have many older students. It is an all girls school. Is it particularly exceptional in many ways? I don't know.

And I think it's not quite in the heart of Oakland. I think it's in Mills Valley, but I am bad with geography. Is anyone better informed than I am about it? (Hopefully)

Classes at Berkeley? that sounds nice.

How close is Berkeley to Oakland? (my geography is bad as well...)

Mills is in Oakland. Oakland & Berkeley are adjacent. You can easily take a bus or BART between Oakland & Berkeley. (Mill Valley is in the North Bay area, by Sausalito, Kentfield, etc-- across the bay from Berkeley/Oakland.)

My Grandmother actually went to Mills. The Mills campus is attractive (at least enough to make lots of pretty shots of the campus.)

If you live in Ca, go visit.

Berkeley is about 15-20 minutes from Oakland... and what you said about Oakland may be true, but there is a lot to the city as well... lots of good people along with the bad. :) The school is nicely diverse (along with men on campus pursuing graduate degrees) And from what I hear they are pretty generous with aid.

What's your major? Definitely check it out, especially if you're in nor cal. I'm in so cal, planning to visit quite soon...although I'll be applying as a transfer....

I have a friend who goes to Mills, who absolutely LOVES it. I haven't ever heard a negative thing about Mills, but this may be because I'm an east coast girl, and Mills isn't really talked about...

A fine school, but geographically undersirable, IMO. A wonderful, self-contained campus, but there is nothing to walk to outside the security fence -- no pizza joints, no movie theaters, no coffee shops, etc.

One definitely would need a car to get out. BART is accessible to Mills only by bus ride (downtown Oakland, or Coliseum Stations), but not something I'd recommend doing at night, unless the A's are playing. (East Oakland has the highest crime rate in the state.)

Direct drive time to Berkelely is ~20 minutes (non-rush hour), but parking in Berkeley is expensive and near impossible.

Mills is a nice little school, and has a beautiful campus. But, when we visited, we noticed that there is very little within safe walking distance of campus so you are basically confined to the campus or need to take public transit/car to get elsewhere.

Mills also has a rather unusual student body, with quite a few older students (25-plus) who have returned to college and are quite noticeable on campus. Some even live on campus. Mills does have males in its graduate programs, so we did see men walking around.

Mills students do have the option of cross-registering for one class a semester at Berkeley (and other bay area schools) but I would research carefully how realistic it is to do because even Berkeley students can have trouble with class close-outs and I suspect Mills students would be low on the priority list for class admission. The ability to cross-register would be a plus, because Mills is such a small school (under 1,000 students) that classes offered in some departments are limited.

The dorms at Mills were beautiful, with many singles available.

mills is not in the worst part of Oakland, but not the best either. Here's a link from the mills web site http://www.mills.edu/admission/undergraduate/near_campus.php
