Bama Mini-Golf on Alabama Highway 69 South will be back in business Labor Day weekend.

The miniature golf course has been closed for years. The new owner has been working to renovate the facility in time for the Sept. 3 opening.

Youth minister Mike Simmons heard the same complaint from kids when he recently moved back to Tuscaloosa after working at a youth camp in Oklahoma for four years: Theres nothing to do here.

I kept hearing people say We have nothing to do and Theres nothing for families to do, he said. They were right. We wanted this to be a place where families can have a good time a Christian-based, family-*oriented entertainment center for anyone from toddlers to grandparents.

Workers have cleaned and prepared the 18-hole, intermediate course. An advanced, 18-hole course and a nine-hole beginners course should be open next spring, Simmons said.

Eventually, he wants to update the course with a volcano, black lights and lasers and change the name from Bama Mini-Golf to Fire Mountain. He wants to one day add a dry bar and grill, where alcohol will not be served.

I want it to be a full Christian night club, he said. There will be no smoking, no guns. Just somewhere where families can come and have a good time.

The course is located at 7825 Alabama Highway 69 S. On weekdays when school is in session, hours will be 4-10 p.m. On Saturdays and on weekdays when schools are closed, the course will be open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. It will be closed on Sundays.

A round of golf will cost $5 for people older than 5. Children younger than 5 can play for $2.50. Simmons said he will run a buy-one-get-one-free special on rounds of golf on opening day.
