Wanted to get an idea of what kind of classes I should take for minoring in chinese. Although I’m chinese, I can only speak and understand it well whereas reading and writing are quite weak. Would I be able to be placed in higher level classes due to my background or will I follow the traditional classes that most people take?

Hey, I’m a Chinese major at OSU.

First off, you should email Steven Knicely, he’s the head of the Chinese Language program and he’s also the go-to guy for heritage speakers like yourself to get credit for classes.
Here’s his page, the email’s on there so just contact him through that.

Anyway, OSU has the perfect Chinese program for someone like you because they offer reading and writing only classes. These classes are actually the intensive version of classes that majors and minors take instead of regular classes, but I always see heritage speakers like yourself in them. However, to get into these classes, you have to first pass first year Chinese (Chinese 1101 and 1102), which is why you should see Steven Knicely since you may be able to get credit already.

As for what classes to take, it’s pretty straightforward. Just complete the requirements for the minor and you’re set. You can see a list here if you scroll down.
