Misdemeanor and grad school

I am in the process of applying to graduate programs for education and I have come across over four applications already asking about previous charges or convictions. I am really worried that this will disqualify my chances. My GPA is a 3.7, I have previous research experience and solid letters of rec. But I am really scared and ashamed to admit this 3rd-degree theft charge. I have not been convicted yet, since this is recent and has been dragging on since May 2017. Since this is so recent, I feel that many programs might deem that I am not ready for graduate school and will ruin all the hard work that I have put in so far. I am certain I can get a deferred sentence to dismiss my charges, but that won’t be for another two years, and then I can fully vacate and seal my record. But right now, I am really doubting I will even get into a program. Any advice?

On most applications you have to fill out background information on this sort of thing. Just follow the instructions honestly.

Most schools ask you to explain what happened. I think if you’re honest and show that you are mature and ready for grad school. It shouldn’t be that big a deal with your GPA and research experience.

What field are you in? Some fields won’t care unless you seem like a recidivist who will not be able to complete the program, others care a LOT.

I am in the Education Policy field. There is only three schools that have asked so far about charges (Indiana Univ- Bloomington, Stanford and Univ of Maryland, College Park)
I really hope this does not hurt my chances at Bloomington. They require additional paperwork and even official documents regarding the case.
