Missed deadline question

Hi all!

I am punching myself in the face about this. But basically, I had designated USC as my first choice with the NMF corporation. I assumed (all my fault) that all university deadlines were May 1. But I got into BU last week, which offers a half tuition scholarship for NMF, and checked the website to find that their deadline is March 1. I am devastated that I made this mistake and I found out that I was not accepted to USC today.

I called the financial aid office last week (about 2 days after my acceptance) and they said that the deadline has passed so I cannot get the scholarship but to email them and update them about my status as a finalist. And that maybe I could receive something. The person on the phone seemed to be in a rush and did not elaborate on anything and hung up before I could say bye so I did not get to ask much more but I went ahead and emailed.

I emailed 5 days ago and no response, I understand they are very busy probably due to an influx of financial aid questions after the RD decisions.

But my family and I are really worried about this as if I do not receive the scholarship or any money at all I will probably not be able to go.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any idea what the “something” could be? I’ve heard that BU is notorious for being a bit stingy with aid or scholarships so I do not have high hopes.

And does anyone have any advice for my situation or is it a lost cause? Do you think I could write an appeal and mail to them? The only reason I am holding onto hope is that the person I spoke to on the phone told me to email. But he also seemed like he just wanted to finish the call to speak to the next person because they were so backed up (I waited 20 minutes during an usually non busy time of day).

Thank you guys in advance!

I would say just continue to reach out and let them know you are interested. Let them know you really want to go there and ask about any other scholarships that might be available.

@chocolatepanda ,
Go online to NM, change your First Choice College to BU, and then call BU to tell they ARE your first choice and you intend to enroll there IF you WILL receive a 1/2 NM scholarship. You CAN change your first choice college with NM any time until mid May.

Good luck.

I would talk to someone in Admissions, not Financial Aid, and tell them what @menloparkmom suggests.

This is too late for the OP, but future applicants can be considered for the Presidential Scholarship which goes to the top 5% academically - only requirement is to apply by Dec 1. Many NMSF would be competitive for this award (which is the same amount of $ as the NMF award).
