missed TOEFL IBT minimum section score by 1 point. Still eligible?

Hi guys! I'm from Singapore and I am applying to UMICH College of Engineering as an International Transfer Student.

I received a total score of 100 in the TOEFL IBT, with every section scores meeting the minimum scores stated, except for Speaking section. I received a score of 22 in Speaking section.

According to Michigan Engineering | Admission Requirements, the minimum TOEFL IBT score is 88-106 (section scores of at least 23 on reading, listening, and speaking, and at least 21 on writing).

I was thinking if my application would still be considered for admission even though i missed the minimum score by 1 point in the Speaking section, even though my overall score is >88 points? Will my TOEFL score endanger my chance of getting admitted to UMICH College of Engineering?

All comments are welcomed!

Thx!

hey
i think no one on the board here can answer your question
the best thing you can possibly do is contact the university ;)

haha! thx for the advice! But I do hope to use this chance to gauge my chances of gaining admission.

anyone? please?

That’s odd - if you add up the required minimums, you get 90 (not 88), unless that’s not how the scoring works. So, maybe there’s some wiggle room in the scoring minimums.

yea! i also realized that too! thanks for the input! I have yet to receive response from the school.

Infin,
so how did it go with your school, what did they say?
I got 103 points and 22 in speaking too. I needed 106 points, damn! (with no minimum in the subcategories)
I have to send the results on Monday and wait for what they say. I am so scared, it is my dream Master, I can’t get refused because of the TOEFL ibt:-(
Please let me know, I know it depends on the university, but would like to know how strict are they in general.
Or anybody similar experience, please?
Thanks!

you’re from Singapore and you still have to take the TOEFL? that’s kinda weird…

Even people who had lived in the US for years are sometimes required to take it, so yeah.

And to the OP, I think colleges tend to be fairly allowing when it comes to their TOEFL requirements; ring you college up to find out how nice they are.

Hi there! I am still waiting for decision from UMich. I was accepted by Imperial College and UIUC. Where shld I go?

I will update again if I receive acceptance from UMich =)

well you gotta ask those admission officers in UMich. But dont give it lots of hope, because this is how I got rejected by UChicago, it requires 26 in writing, but I only got 25 even though my total score is great
