Alright so in my english class i have 262/340 points with our final tomorrow worth 60 points. I need a 58/60 to get a B. Well I missed 5 days of class the whole semester because i live 40 minutes away and it was always a pain to get to class that a few times things happened (car broke down, car accident slowing traffic) that i couldnt attend class 5 times. My professor deducted 20 points from my grade which is why its a 262 instead of a 282. Do you think i should email someone about this? because i know i can get at least a 38/60 on the final to get a B, but i cant because of the absence deduction. I don't think it's right that even though the work i put in merited a B i'll probably get a C because of their stupid policy. Should I try and do something about this?? Thanks.

Read the course syllabus. If the absence policy is clearly stated there, then you have no leg to stand on, sorry. Good luck on the final!

So let me get this straight:

1) The professor defined your current grade as a 262/340.
2) Despite needing what you need on the final to earn a B, you didn’t meet the standard that was provided to you at the beginning of the course re: attendance.
3) You want the professor to ignore that standard and give you a grade you didn’t earn.

Sorry, I have little sympathy for people that grade grub. You might make the argument that it is a stupid policy, but it is a policy that was made perfectly clear to you at the beginning of this semester. If the professor decides to give you those points, then kudos. If he/she doesn’t, I wouldn’t try and beg for a better grade.

For the future, if something beyond your control prevents you from getting to class, contact the professor as soon as possible afterwards. It’s easier to get leniency if you ask at the time, and it shows that you care about the class. If you wait to ask until the end of the semester it can look like you are just making excuses to boost your grade.

If it’s in the syllabus or otherwise an explicitly stated policy, it’s your own fault and there’s nothing you should really be able to do about it at this point. If there’s no explicitly stated policy, you have a case.

I wish my professors were that lenient. I have two classes where they deduct a letter grade for every absence after the second, e.g. from an A to an A-. Attendance is mandatory in all my courses except Intro Chinese (where they seem to let people slack because so many people got placed there because they’re not quite good enough for the 200 level class).

You should try and learn for the future. Attendance matters in most classes your first two years. The smaller the class, the more your attendance matters. Be lucky you only lost 20 points out of 400 total (340+60) which is only 5% of your grade, and not 10% or more.
