MIT as an international applicant

Hello,

I’m an exchange student from Germany. At the moment (and for the rest of the school year) I attend a high school in Virginia as a junior. When I will go back to Germany I will attend two more grades (11th and 12th) there until I’m done with school. And after finishing school I want to go to MIT. I already read a couple of articles on the MIT website, but I’m still not sure how competitive it is to get into as an international applicant. My stats are not very good yet (10 years guitr lessons, 8 years tennis, exchange year) these are just the most important. It has to be said that there are not many possibilities to get extracurricular achievements in Germany (no school clubs etc). But I’m still trying to get get as good achievements as I can, by attending many clubs, probably founding a club, volunteering, attending competitions in high school etc. And I’m probably going to attend a science summer program in London (Imperial College) in 2017. My grades at school were in 9th and 10th grade around 3.7 (GPA) and here in the US it they even increase.

So my questions are,

  1. Is it possible to get good enough extracurricular achievments for MIT in about two year??
  2. Which certificates does MIT require? (From which grades)
  3. What are my chances at all?

Thank you

What you listed as stats (guitar and tennis) are actually ec’s. You haven’t given enough information for anyone to be able to tell you what your chances of acceptance are though. Why do you want to go to MIT? It’s one of the most difficult colleges to get into in the US. The acceptance rate for internationals is about 3%. The vast majority if applicants, both foreign and domestic, have grades and test scores in the top couple of percentiles. Even with perfect grades and test scores it would be a reach.

I just want to know if its possible to collect enough extracurricular achievements in 2 years to get a realistic chance.
I mean is its possible when I do everything that I can get do improve my application from now on. Like clubs/founding, competitions, volunteering, internships, summer programs… I didnt take any tests yet so I cant tell you my scores.

You are not getting it. EC’s may help you application but what are your academic grades and SAT/ACT scores. Those are still the most important factors.

My grades are almost perfect and I did not take the SAT / ACT yet. So how can you know that I won’t get in?

Who said that you won’t get in? A reach means that you have a very small chance of being admitted as is the case for everyone.

And the MIT adcoms do not like applicants who “collect” EC’s in order to impress them.

“You are not getting in” your words. Anyway. I just mean that successful MIT applicants have an incredible good CV. And my question is if it’s possible to get such a CV in the two years I have until I will apply…?

They accepted 132 international applicants. The average GPA is like a 4.3. Average 50% ACTs are 33-35. He’s not saying you won’t get in, but a 3.7 is hardly “perfect” and your EC’s are not good. Colleges can tell when you turn up the EC’s all at once. MIT wants to see an interest in your passions since a young age. Going to one science summer camp doesn’t exactly scream “I love STEM”

No, I said you are not getting IT.

Oh I see, sorry

You are probably right, thank you for the answers!
