Are MIT's dorms co-ed? Does MIT have non-coed dorms? I heard MIT dorms don't have an adult presence/RA, is this true? What are the different dorms like, can you list them by name and personality?

is having no adult moderator in the dorms a problem?

MIT’s dorms are mostly coed - McCormick is the one dorm that is all-female. Certain dorms have single gendered floors, but they’re rare. Trust me, though, living coed isn’t a big deal ;). If you have a religious reason to do it, you can indicate that on the housing form.

False. In East Campus, we have at least one GRT (Graduate Resident Tutor) for each floor and one headmaster (professor) for the dorm. Other dorms work similarly :). The only time we have RA’s (who are undergraduate students) is over the summer.

Dorms by name and personality:

East Campus: Awesome

Everywhere else: I don’t know, I don’t live there.

But seriously, the dorms are as follows:

Baker
Bexley
Burton-Conner
East Campus
Senior Haus
Random
McCormick
MacGregor
Simmons
NW35
New
Next

And within New, there are cultural floors and such. As for personalities, come to CPW and see for yourself.

Why would you need an adult moderator to be present? =p

This isn’t high school anymore. ;)

What exactly is NW35? I haven’t heard much about it - I thought it was a graduate dorm?

I think its mainly a graduate dorm that is becoming an undergraduate dorm. Not sure tho

NW35 (New Ashdown) is a graduate dorm that is momentarily hosting the undergraduate population intending to populate W1 (Old Ashdown) once renovations to the latter are complete.

Um, the large majority of the students are adults, as are the graduate resident tutors, the house manager, and the housemasters.

MIT does have one non-coed dorm (McCormick, which is women-only) a non-coed ILG (WILG, which is women-only) and a few other non-coed sections of dorms (Random is a mix of all-male, all-female, and coed floors, and Chocolate City is men-only). And, of course, most of the Greek houses are single-gender.

Edit: Oh, I should answer this question…

MIT dorms do not have RAs, except during the summer. They have GRTs (graduate resident tutors), who are sort of like RAs except that 1) they are older, and 2) they tend to play more of a helping/counseling role and less of a rules-enforcement role.
