MIT FAQ for application year 2008-2009

The average GPA of MIT admitted students is usually very high, but class rank is definitely important. If you are in the top 10% of your high school class, the actual value of your GPA is somewhat irrelevant.

i`m not from USA. Here, do extracurricular ativities or have high grades in your school records arent relevant in your apllication to colleges. Because of this, i didnt many extracurricular ativities (i did very, very few ativities), and my school rates are between 8 (B+) and 9 (A-), only... i didnt worried a lot about high school rates...
my school dont disseminates the student's rank... i dont know even if it has this kind of statistics... wow. [:(] And now? what can i do?

first ... take a few english classes please, and try to do well ... coz with a stupendously bad CR SAT or TOEFL u might not have a chance as such and gud english is a very important prerequisite ....
second ... its ok!! havin' no significant ECs can't keep u out of MIT running. It's ur dedication and intellectual curiosity that counts ... so if it comes out from ur essays, recs and ur transcript I don't see what can keep u out of the running.
So ... don't worry!!!

MIT is familiar with the typical high school activities of students in a large variety of countries.

From the admissions website:
We are familiar with many international school systems, including, but not limited to, the IB, A Levels, the French Baccalaureat, and CBSE, and we assure you that we will understand your curriculum and your context. Your application will be reviewed within the context of the resources available to you, including your situation as affected by family, school, culture, region, and country.
There are other tips for international applicants on the same page.

Still, international admissions are very competitive, as MIT places a quota on the number of international students admitted each year.

@mollie

is CR-600 and W-610 too low for MIT?

should i retake? i have perfect scores in math 1 and SAT Subject tests.

I think it's advisable not to have any sections below 700. Above that, your SAT score is more than competitive, especially since you already have an 800 in one section.

A 2010 is on the low side for MIT. If you can get at least 700 on CR and W, you'd have a 2200, which is a tremendous improvement.

does MIT consider writing scores? my math+cr is 1530 (800m/730cr) but i only have 670W

You can see from the admissions statistics that 162 admits had a CR score between 600 and 640 two years ago (this year's stats aren't up quite yet). 11% of applicants with a CR score between 600 and 640 were admitted.

A CR score above 600 is not going to kill an application by itself, for sure.

I will ask about the writing scores. They were not considered the first year of the triune SAT, nor (I believe) last year, but I have not heard about them one way or another for this year.

It's august 1st !! No sign of the application yet. Have the admissions specified that august 1st is the day the realease the apps ??

They said Complete Part 1 of the Application after August 1! Its just morning in the US now, so maybe as the day progress the app may be up!!

Well I won't be having internet for a month starting 2mor...
So I hope it's out in a couple of hours (before my bedtime heehe)

My friend called admissions today and they told her the application will be posted "early next week."

Question for mollie (or anyone else who knows the answer): who is the head of the dance department at MIT? Thanks!

All of the theater arts and dance faculty are listed here.

the application will be up later today!

Indeed, that was confirmed here: MIT Admissions | Blog Entry: "MIT Freshman Application: Live on Monday". The blog entry is also a good read to familiarize yourself with the application calendar for this year.

Just curious, but how are the ECs assigned? It's interesting that it's one specific person. How many applicants are assigned to each EC?

That completely depends on how many ECs there are in your area and their locations.

Hi mollie can you add "please read this first" to the title of this thread, so people don't ask the same questions over and over.

a few questions and short answers I came up with.

I didn't take _____AP is that going to hurt my chances?
Chances are that plenty of MIT student didn't take it in hs either. Just challenge yourself as much as you can. Not taking one class isn't going to keep you out of MIT.

Should I take _____ (insert non AP) or __(AP)? I like/have done (insert non AP), but I think _(AP) would looks better.

If that class really mean something to you, don't let the lack of the title "AP" in the class name stop you from doing what you like. MIT would want you to spend time on things you really enjoy and are passionate about.

I did really badly on (bio/chem/physics) SAT2, but did well on (physics/bio/chem), well my bad score hurt my chances?
MIT only looks at your best score in a math and a science subject test.

mollie feel free to edit it and maybe add to the FAQ?
i'll try to think of more later...
Not only does it vary with each region and location, it also varies with each EC.
I have some EC's in my region who gladly will take 15 candidates per year, others who only want 3 or 4. I know of several regions where every high school has an assigned EC, and all candidates from that HS automatically get that EC. I know of regions where every candidate is automatically assigned to the regional coordinator (RC) for that region, who then parcels them out amongst his or her EC's. It varies a lot.

We will change assigned EC's for a whole bunch of reasons. One year I had a candidate due to fly in to interview with me at roughly the same week
that my wife was due to give birth to our daughter. I reassigned that candidate to another EC, as I could not guarantee that I could attend the scheduled interview. We have had EC's who went on holiday at the time that the candidate most wanted to be interviewed.

There is no stigma attached to being reassigned, it does happen all the time. You will get an interview, from a properly trained EC, who will do their level best to answer all of your questions about MIT and who will know what to look for in the interview.

Oh and yes, our EC reports do get graded by the admissions office.
-Mikalye

Interview Question

MIT asks us to contact our EC and set-up the interview "as soon as possible". So, can we do that now? I have already finished Part 1, so setting up the interview now is OK right? Thanks!
