Haha, I am doing the exact same thing (a robotics mentor letter, lots of time there). It’s definitely fine, as long as they show different sides of you that the teachers from school couldn’t show.

i submitted part 1 of the application online. but, as i was looking through it later, i realized that i accidentally left the “Educational Counselor” line blank. is this a big deal?

Question: I’m currently attending an international school, but I’m a US citizen (I was born in the US, have a US passport, and used to live there). Technically, I’m not an international applicant (according to [MIT Admissions: International Applicants: Helpful Tips](http://mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/international_applicants_helpful_tips/index.shtml)), but just to make sure, am I allowed to apply early??

I’m kind of confused about this because some people have told me that if you try to apply early from an international school, MIT will defer you :

Can someone answer my question #109 please?
What does the “Are you registered ?” question mean in part1?I am an international student.

For MIT, your citizenship is what matters, not where you’re living. Since you’re a US citizen, you can apply early no matter where your school is located.

It’s not true that MIT automatically defers applicants from international schools, but you can probably see how that’s an easy rumor to propagate, considering that most EA applicants are deferred each year.

Sorry, I don’t have access to the application, so I can’t answer technical questions about it. Could it be asking whether you’re registered on MyMIT?

I think it asks you for your alien registration number. I was confused as well.

@frizz-

we love to see robotics letters. FIRST kids represent!

^love

Chris, were you on a team? I’m on HYPER 69 :D

haha no way, I was on Team 1073. At the Granite State Regional in 2004 we teamed up with you guys (back then alliances were only 2 teams) and scored the highest single round score at the regional. We just demolished everyone. My lil bro and I were human players (it was a basketball centered game) and we didn’t touch the robot, just practiced all year, blew out other folks, and your human player was a basketball / FIRST kid.

The only reason we didn’t win was because of the single most amazing play I’ve ever seen in FIRST, which was WPI’s robot doing a backflip while hanging on a 10 foot high bar to knock the 2x multiplier yoga ball off of the goal cap.

The 2004 game was my alltime favorite FIRST game by far and my fondest memories were those with HYPER 69. We never see you guys anymore because you don’t come up to Granite State! Ask some of the oldtimers on your team about that year - it was incredible.

Good luck this season!

Thanks so much, Mollie! :)

That’s awesome. I think I know what robot that is. I think it’s the one with the huge wheels. We still have it, haha.

THAT’S AWESOME
Team Force, right? I think there was a combo called Max-Hyper-Force or something for the winning alliance we had.

Yea, we stay in Boston more now. We might be heading to nationals this year, depending on the mentors and where they want to go. We’ve been doing a lot of florida and arizona lately, which have also been fun.

I think this knowledge has completely made my day.

I have (another ^_^") question on the essay: should we be straightforward in answering the essay questions or can we also relate (slightly) the topic to our desire or stimulus in applying at MIT?

Hi, so when I entered high school I wasn’t considered “advanced” so I started in Algebra, but I did work my way up and this year I’ll be finishing Calc BC. Should I put this in additional info because I feel it means a lot.

Also my SAT Math and Subject test MathII are low 600’s. I want to retake Oct & Nov. will MIT see my scores in time for Early Action?

Hey, on section 2 of part 2, where it asks for summer activities, and says to list the most recent ones first, are we supposed to pick our 3 favorite summer activities that we’ve done throughout ALL of high school, and then put them in order of most recent? or do we just pick the 3 most recent?

thanks guys
-michael

@ Michael,
Don’t overthink this. Just pick the handful of summer activities that you think really showcase your interests and talents, then report them in order, starting with the most recent.

Most high-school students have been involved in scores of summer activities over the years. These can range from the really mundane (helped my grandmother clean out her garage) to the exotic (assisted with medical research project in Nigeria). Some of them are probably discussed elsewhere in the application. Don’t elaborate in this section on something that’s already highlighted elsewhere.

@somead -

Your GC should note that you put in extra time to jump to the advanced track.

And the latest test that we consider for early is November, so yes, if you take the October/November tests we’ll see them early.

@michael -

Organize them however you see fit.

I have a question about the Secondary School Report Form and the Midyear Report.
I am an international and I have finished high school last June (i am currently taking a gap year).
How am I supposed to fill these two requirements? I have the diploma and all, should I send a notarized copy to you guys when the time comes?

MITChris,
For the essay question, “Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why?” what if we REALLY don’t know what we want to major in?
Also, at MIT, have most of the computer science majors had experience in the field, or are there people who haven’t been exposed to it at all before arriving?

Many people certainly do come in with prior experience, but there’s a class at MIT (6.00, Introduction to Computer Science and Programming) that’s specifically intended for students with little or no prior programming experience.

Do you have an idea of what you’re interested in? I mean, if you’re potentially interested in several majors at MIT but don’t know which interests you the most, it would be fine to pick one and write about it, even if you don’t know whether it’s your most likely choice. If you don’t know what you want to major in because nothing at MIT sounds interesting to you, that’s a different story.

Is it okay to submit supplementary materials before submitting an application? Will it get matched later to my application? Do I send supplementary materials to the admission office (like the ones for art portfolio)?
