MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

“Self-reported course work
We receive many different transcripts from various high schools. In an attempt to gain a better understanding of your high school studies, we ask that you complete the following form. To be completed by students in U.S. or U.S. based school systems only.”

Should Canadian applicants fill out this part? Thanks!

Yes, everything will get matched up. Just make sure you put your name and date of birth on them.

All supplemental material (except music supplements) should be sent to the admissions office.

MIT is a reach school for my S - although he has amazing math scores 780 on SAT 740 on SATII 34 on ACT, his CR and W scores are only in the high 600s. We really want to prep for the interview and are wondering if the process is more informational or evaluative. Does anyone know any of the questions the interviewer might ask, or is there somewhere where some questions might be posted? Thanks

^ Didn’t you read the interview guide thread? It’s the very first one posted. See

The character of the interview is much more informational than evaluative. Doubtless there are evaluations that are made - it would be impossible to not make them - but the purpose is informational.

If I want to submit multiple ACT scores, can I send one in and self-report the rest?

Hey MITChris, I have a question that probably seems really silly… But, should our teachers paper mail the teacher evaluation forms or upload them online ? And if they should upload them online, how do they do this?

Thanks. :)

@MIT Chris
I am asking again:

“Self-reported course work

Hi MITChris,

I have a question about sending a supplemental recommendation from a research mentor. My school uses Naviance to electronically send the teacher evaluations. My research mentor is a teacher at my school. Will she be able to send an additional supplement letter via Naviance or should I have her mail the form with the supplement cover sheet?

Thanks!

MITchris:
Grade 9 is condered high school by MIT admission? If so, must I include that school name and my records in application? My highschool in Canada begins with grade 10…

Justasenior : They’ll have to mail it.

boom: Thanks for the link - I didn’t see it - I am overwhelmed with info.

Hi, my brother is applying and he had a question concerning the difficulty of ap’s. Do admission officers know that a class like ap human geography is much easier than ap u.s, or that ap environment science is much easier than ap chemistry/physics?

Are they aware of this or just base difficult on the number of ap’s? I know the difficult of ap’s vary across the nation, but i suspect that geo/enviro are still the easiest.

For example…Would the two schedules have the same difficulty in the eyes of admission officers?

number 1: h.w time
Ap U.S- 30-1 hour
Ap Calc B.C- 1-2 hours
Ap Physics C- 1-2 hours
Ap Eng Lang- 30-1 hour
Ap Chem- 1-2 hours

number 2: h.w time
Ap Psychology- 30min
Ap Human Geography-30 min
Ap Environmental Science-30min
Ap Eng Lang-30-1 hour
Ap Statistics-30min

number 1 is better from an MIT perspective. but we really only require calc / chem / phys / bio.

What exactly qualifies as a scholastic or a nonscholastic distinction?
Is USAMO scholastic or non-scholastic?

I asked this question in a thread before but I want to get a little more clarification: so it says if you have done research to submit a rec from mentor and an Abstract/executive summary in the optional section. HOWEVER, I wanted to write something else about me in that section. Am I allowed to mail/fax the abstract/executive summary with the supplemental document attached as a cover sheet to MIT so that I have the space in the optional section to put my additional essay?

sure, that’s fine.

MITChris, I have a question. In the website you don’t state a limit for the IELTS score, yet based on what most other schools say a score of at least 7 in every section is enough.

However, I have a score of 6.5 in Speaking(got very nervous)/Writing and 8 Reading, 8.5 Listening. The overall score is 7.5
Would my two 6.5 affect my app negatively???

If I took the SATs and the ACTs and my CR is better than my reading score on the ACTs and my ACT math score is ALOT better than my SAT math score but my ACT science score is pretty bad, should I still send my ACT score? I did well on the Biology M SAT2, I have the highest science average in my grade (in AP science courses) and I spent the past two summers doing research and writing research papers. Being that my science teacher and research mentor who know me well are writing me letters of recommendation which should (hopefully) reflect my capabilities, do you think that a bad science score on the ACTs could be harmful enough that it might not be worth sending my ACT score in the first place?
