MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

Hey, how long does it take to process teacher evaluations? My teacher mailed it approx 2 weeks ago (from california) and on my myMIT account, the evaluation is still not checked. thanks

For the teacher evaluation form B, which requires a humanities or social science teacher, I was wondering if I could get my IB Business and Management teacher to write it. I know that under IB, Business is listed as a social science, but I’m not sure if that is what MIT classifies it as.

Thanks for your help!

There’s no standardized time, but it can take a while with so many applications to file. Don’t worry about it until one of the admissions officers posts a blog entry saying they’re through sorting all the mail (which usually happens in early/mid-November). If your letter still isn’t processed then, they will have instructions on how to submit it (often via fax). It’s not a problem.

Matt McGann [has said before](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/the_freshman_application/some_recommendations_about_rec.shtml) that any subject that would be taught in the SHASS (School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences) at MIT is fine for the evaluation B. Management happens to be in a separate school at MIT, but you’re right that it’s often considered a social science, so it is almost certainly okay.

Will application readers know what the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award is without further explanation?

Hi,

I took some college level engineering classes over the summer at the University of Miami. I would like to send my transcript from UM. Should I have them send it directly to MIT Admissions, or send it to me so that I can attach a supplemental cover sheet? I don’t know if this is technically considered a supplemental material.

Thanks!

it can be sent to you first. or you can just send them separately.

Should I bother putting my AMC scores if I can’t verify them? I remember it was 100-109 but I’m reluctant to put anything if I don’t have the number for sure.

Hey MITChris, I just noticed under my SAT scores on my application tracking page, one of them is the one I took back in 8th grade through Johns Hopkins CTY program. I obviously wouldn’t have done as well on that as later ones, so is that one going to be looked at if my others are around 500 points higher at least? I mean I know you guys look at the highest of each section, but I wanted to take the SAT a third time, so would it look bad if I took it this “third” time, but “fourth” including my 8th grade one?

Also, I already sent in Part I of my application, and said I’d be getting a fee waiver (I clicked that because I plan on trying to get one and wanted to start Part II). I’m not sure now if I can get one. So how do I go about paying the application fee?

^just wondering, where do you find the tracking page? is it only available after you send in part 1?

@tmanneopen - we will not hold your 8th grade SATs against you. we only look at your highest scores anyway.

Is that okay if my teacher send in the letter of recommendation before I submit part 1? thank you!

Hey,

I’m a bit worried about the recommendation letters. Is it weighted very heavily? My teacher wrote a letter. The letter itself is wonderful, however for parts B and D, they both checked mostly “better than most” and a few "okay"s. Is this bad? Which part is looked at more, the check marks or the letter itself?

Also, I was wondering, do we need to send our AP scores to MIT now, or should we wait to see if we get in before sending them?

Thanks,
Eloquentmayhem

don’t worry about the BTMs and OKs.

send whatever scores you have / want.

Can I combine ECs into one slot? For example, putting “Basketball” in the slot and explaining in the description that it was both club bball and school bball. Or “Science-related clubs” and describing them individually in the description. Or “Community service” and discussing various services in description.

Also, if I mention that the tutoring I did was “community service,” does that have to be concurrent with the school’s record of my community service. A lot of what I consider community service (ex: tutoring peers) was not official.

Another quick question -

One of my favorite hobbies is making short films. In the section to submit a URL for inventions/robots/etc., would it be okay if I included a URL to watch one of my short film creations (about 10 minutes)? Would this actually be considered a worthy supplement that showcases one of my talents, or would it just be a waste of time in the admissions process?

Thanks!!

I have heard of people doing this before, and it sounds like a great idea.

A film is an invention, too. You should certainly submit the URL if it’s something you’d like the admissions officers to see, although of course they can’t guarantee they’ll be able to watch the whole thing.

Hello!

I have recently had an interview with an EC. Would it be unwise for me to rehash the things I discussed with him in my essays, or would further elaboration be better?

Edit: Woops, double post.

I’m going to write about how I set up an advertising rate schedule for the school newspaper, and produced enough revenue to expand the size of each issue. There were a lot of problems to encounter, - but

In this one I’m also going to mention what I did with the newspaper to show my persistence/initiative, SO IS THAT OK?

it’s OK, but if you want to use the other one as your challenge essay, you can come up with something else to write there too.
