MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

I think this might already be somewhere on the website, but I just want to clarify on this: Can I send in Part 1 of the application and then send in Part 2 in like 1 month or so? I’m applying regular decision.

^ Correct. Submitting part I as soon as you can is probably best, since they can file your teacher recommendations and such appropriately as they arrive. You can take your time on part II.

This is a question about college admissions in general, but I’m interested in MIT’s take:

Would it be considered a “hook” if I am a permanent resident, born in another country, learned English as a second language, and mostly speak another language at home?

Does MIT use the writing portion of the SAT for admissions. Dr. Perelman said the writing section of the SAT is not a good judge of writing capability.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/04/education/04education.html

No, MIT doesn’t use the writing section.

I don’t think the word “hook” applies to MIT admissions. MIT’s standards are so high that nothing is going to guarantee admission, which is what “hook” implies for me. (Though this might not be your definition - feel free to clarify.)

Is it an interesting part in a holistic application? Sure.

This is essentially what I meant by a “hook”. Something that would catch the adcom’s eye and perhaps give me a slight edge?

@NewAccount -

You should definitely tell us about it. We’ll take it into context. But it isn’t really rare in our applicant pool. So you shouldn’t rely on it as a ‘hook’, realistically speaking.

Right. Thanks for the advice. I am certainly mentioning it in my app.

Perhaps the fact that I am applying EA will help my cause.

If deferred from EA, will that negatively affect the applicant during the RD round or is that putting the applicant on equal playing ground?

@NewAccount -

Just to be clear, there is no strategic advantage to applying EA.

But don’t worry about trying to develop a hook. Sometimes students don’t have a clear one. Sometimes they’re not conscious of something that admissions officers will perceive in their application. If you’d like to apply to MIT, you should apply.

@cornetking -

No negative prejudice is associated with or conferred by being deferred.

MITchris

Do I have a considerable hook considering the following:

My mother has an associate degree from a community college(has not worked in 17yrs) and my father never attended college. Would I be considered first generation?

I am Puerto Rican. NHRP scholar(1400sat 630cr, 770m).

Thanks.

Should I be concerned with the 630cr score. I am retaking the sat in October.

Thanks for the help, MITChris.

Is being an eagle scout a noteworthy accomplishment, or is it prevalent enough among applicants so as to have minimal significance? I’ve been getting mixed responses and I would just like to clarify.

I’m fairly certain that what you’ve done for the scouts will be far more important than any title you’ve received from them.

Are the essay word limits strict? If I were to send something over would it be read? The word limits are kind of tough to adhere to.

@testtaker1
You would be considered an Underrepresented Minority, so that’ll give a slight advantage. Although no advantage will make up for inferior academics. Your SAT scores are good enough.

@sjn732
mollie had said that you should keep it within 10% of the world limit.
So for a 250 limit, go no more than 275.
Yes it would be read, and they don’t really count the words anyways. But if it gets too long, they’ll not want to read it.

Like they said on the application, try to say what you gotta say concisely. If you can’t keep it under the limit, then you’re writing too much

@testtaker1:

You would be considered FGC for us, yes.

@Ivystriver2:

Eagle Scout is not a significant hook as a title. Lots of Eagle Scouts apply. Depends on what you’ve done.

@sjn -

At a certain point they cut off. You can use the preview to make sure they don’t.

I messed around a bit with the 250 word limit, and I think it’s around 513. Obviously i’m not submitting that much, but that’s the theoretical maximum

For any local students interested in MIT and/or video game R&D, MIT’s GAMBIT Game Lab will be hosting an open house for high school students THIS Monday at 5 PM. It is a great opportunity to see another dimension of MIT - all are welcome, no RSVP required.
