MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

sandro - yes, it will

hafiz - er…I’ve never seen an accounting rec before. I suppose you could make that case. But if there are questions about your preparedness in humanities/social studies and you don’t have a teacher from those disciplines to make the case on your behalf it could be a weakness in your application.

Hi Chris!

One of my teachers wants to send his own letter of recommendation, instead of answering to the MIT questions. Does he have to write his letter on an official school paper?

no, he does not. but he should still send our top form (the one with the checkboxes).

can my business class teacher write me a reference letter for the humanities teacher . main question is, will does business fall under humanities ?

eh…i suppose so.

If my teachers are submitting their recommendation letters electronically though Naviance, how do they fill out the “top form”? Do they need to mail that in separately?

fax is better - quicker and we don’t need to scan it.

Hi Chris!

So I have a question regarding the self-reported coursework form!
It says that it is “To be completed by students in U.S. school systems only.”

I’m currently doing the IB program at an “American International” school in Europe, which I think can be categorized as being in the “US school system”

However, in 9th and 10th grade, I attended a different non-American international school, where the grading scale was 1 to 7.

I considered filling out just the 11th and 12th grade part, but then I think it looks a bit weird if I only list courses in my junior and senior year.

Do you think it would be better to not fill out the form? My school is sending the transcripts from my current school and my old one.

don’t fill out the form. we’ll look at the transcripts.

Hey Chris!
Would it be extraneous for me to send in a supplementary letter about why I want to go to MIT?

probably. but there’s no harm.

My interview was only 40 minutes long, and I said I don’t know to two questions: 1. is there anything else you want to add? and 2. was there a time you faced a difficult challenge?

What do you guys think?

Mine was about the same length.

Mine was an hour and 10 minutes. Does everyone receive the MIT newsletter?

@sic_infit: I don’t think saying “idk” to 1 would kill you, but 2… eh… I’d feel kinda uneasy about that one, IMO… not to scare you or anything :</p>

My interviewer didn’t exactly stump me with a question, but she made a comment that I didn’t realize until later was probably an attempt to fish a philosophical response out of me… still regret that one. How bout we both just say “whoopsies” and try to forget about it? haha, can’t redo the interview, so that’d probably be best for us.

I am sure that all your interviews went just fine. You will worry yourselves sick if you try to read into it.

The Secondary School Report directs the counselor to attach a copy of my transcript. Does this mean I do not need to send in an official transcript (which costs money)?

Hi. I just wanted to make sure that on the my mit website, all of the boxes except for ‘midyear report’ should be checked off, right? Because I have heard of people who thought they applied early action but actually forgot something. Thanks!

we need a copy of your official transcript from the GC so that it’s definitive and not your self-reported coursework.

The teacher evaluation forms cannot be typed ? the pdfs provided were not fillable PDFs. One of my teachers has a messy writing. What if MIT has hard time reading my teacher evaluation ?
