Thanks, Mollie & Chris.

Just wanted to tell you guys I really appreciate the transparency and direct communication you guys try to maintain with us applicants. It’s really nice and makes this a lot easier - thank you.

Since this is a FAQ though… how does MIT (well, not specifically MIT. most schools, but obviously you won’t answer for them) reconcile the fact that they do not require proof of accomplishments with the depth with which they treat those same accomplishments? Is there a cutoff of accomplishment level at which point you break out Google and make sure?

we have our ways

hi everyone. i just wanted to ask a question about the “application updates” section on the midyear report. how important is this section, or how is this section viewed? because i don’t think i’d have anything new to add by feb. 15. on the other hand, i do have some “jokes” or “inspirational quotes”, as suggested on the online form, but i’m not sure how appropriate they are for an application. i mean, admissions officers are still looking to discover new aspects of the applicants, right? so would perhaps a random joke that i personally find hilarious not be appropriate?

Holistic confirmation?

Hey MITChris,

Do EA admits have to complete the midyear report? I was under the assumption the answer was “no”, but I can access the form through my myMIT account, so now I’m unsure. (Also, if “yes”, when’s the deadline for midyear reports to be completed?)

yes, EA admits have to complete it. the deadline for EA admits will be different though so no rush.

@Chris - I’m an international applicant and sent my December 19 TOEFL scores to MIT. Though not 100% required, I thought I’d send them anyway. I’m just concerned because it hasn’t showed up in myMIT application tracking yet. I can understand that a paper report will take time to process. Thing is, I’m uncertain as to whether MIT opts to receive these scores from ETS via paper mail or via electronic media.

thetechnut -

don’t worry about it.

@Chris - Thanks. By the way, can I assume that you’re still getting bucketloads of mail by the day? ;)

Oh, and since you are in charge of web communications, if you ever find the time, could you consider writing a guest post on my blog? It can be about anything you want to share regarding the admissions procedure. I’m currently writing a series on college admissions, with some emphasis on international applicants. I started it mainly to improve awareness about opportunities available to qualified people, who simply didn’t know how to go about the procedure. It’s still not reached that stage where it talks about the nitty-gritties of the admission procedure, but it’ll get there eventually. So do let me know if you’re interested. The blog can be found at [Universally Speaking](http://www.vivekn.net)

sorry thetechnut, i don’t think that would be appropriate for me to do. thanks for the invitation though!

That’s OK. I just felt compelled to offer, for some semi-inexplicable reason. I can totally understand.

Getting back to FAQ, why are international students explicitly asked not to fill in the self-reported coursework on Part 2 of the application?

because your systems of education are so much different that the box doesn’t really work for it anyway - we just read transcripts etc

Is a percentage-based system really that alien?
And how come the word limit enforced on the mid-year updates was not enforced on the application part 2 short answers and essays?

Chris, this might be more to have your opinion than to ask you something:

Some time after I sent my application, I’ve been offered admission to my local university (in Brazil) after achieving one of the greatest scores on the Brazilian standardized test. Initially, I was thinking of putting that on the MidYear Rerport.

After a while, however, I came with a 250-word essay that doesn’t fit any other part of the application, and thought it would be a great addendum to better depict my personality on the app.

Regarding there is no space on the MidYear Report to report both pieces of information, which would MIT prefer to receive?

Hey Chris,

I gave TOEFL on January 8 and listed MIT as the score recipient (the day prior to the test). I’m also giving January SAT and would like to submit the SAT scores to MIT as well, as I’m performing very good in the practice tests.

But, I didn’t check the SAT 1 boxes in MIT application part 2. So, how should I go about notifying MIT about this? [That I’m submitting my Jan SAT scores also.]
- Send an email.
or - Simply state this thing in mid-year report.

What do you recommend?

Chris -
would it matter if my counselor sort of neglected the AP/IB course question on the school report? (He wrote “see attached transcript” and didn’t fill out that whole section because everything is written on there, except the AP/IB thing. That’s not mentioned anywhere.) Does MIT keep logs of individual schools? My school doesn’t offer AP/IB courses but since it’s not noted in my application perhaps MIT has it from previous applicants. Or should I email the admissions office and note that?

Has anyone noticed that MITChris has 666 posts? :)

I bet that it’s a sign.

if you chose to have the SAT scores sent automatically to us, then you don’t have to do either; we’ll receive them in our system automagically.

@jimmy -

we’ll want to know how the classes you took matched up in the context of your school. hardest offered? easiest offered? middle of the road? have your GC fax that info.

it’s a sign of MEEEEETTTTAAAAAAALLLLLLLL iron maiden starts playing everything catches on fire i ride a dragon over a mountain into the sunset and then the sun explodes into a million billion nuclear comets whaaaaaaaaaa!!!

Chris -
My counselor noted ‘most rigorous’ on the sec. school report (which it is, but the system’s a bit different here - doesn’t matter much though) but only skipped over the AP/IB checkbox (and the other part of that section but it’s all on my transcript.) Shall I ask my counselor to fax in a supplementary message about the AP/IB notice? (And perhaps allow him to speak of the context of my grades/courses/country’s standards?)
