MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

@sandro -

most likely, though it is unlikely we will need to contact them.

All financial aid materials must be completed by February 15 if you want to be sure you’ll get an aid offer before the May 1 reply date.

Thank you, Chris.

MITChris,

Could I still fax my resume (it’s only a page long) to MIT? I had a lot to explain due to my education interruption in high school and couldn’t fit it in the additional information part (the font became very small) I just have access to a fax machine today at my father’s company and would like to know if it will be to late. I really think the resume would add more information to my application.

yes you can gengster.

MITChris,

Just wondering, is it okay if I don’t have any AMC/AIME/etc. scores to submit? My school doesn’t offer those.

Thank you very much MITChris!

Chris or Mollie, I applied EA and was deferred but I did get into another college ED and I will be attending that school. How do I withdraw my applicaion from MIT. I tried call in Admissions but I only get a machine. Thanks

Part of the “deferred” announcement kind of stressed the importance of the mid year report and suggested we add whatever we think may help. My question for the senior members is this: For a couple of other college apps I had to send in a “peer” letter. My buddy wrote me a letter. And wow! It was really good, and I never knew that’s how I am perceived. Wouldn’t this letter be a great way for MIT to get to know me more as a person, and not just another brainiac?

MITChris,

I visited the MIT blog FAQ AFTER submitting my app and found that I left out a couple of non-scholastic distinctions (e.g. Boys’ State, Varsity Letters), but I mentioned that I went to Boys’ State on the summer activities and that I was varsity for my team on the activities section.

Should I do anything (like write on mid-year report) or is that fine?

Many (maybe most) applicants haven’t taken these tests. No problem.

I would probably fax in a letter, if it were me, just to make sure they had it in writing. Congrats on your ED acceptance!

mteverest and Sensei, it’s fine to send those things as updates if you feel it’s important. It’s fine not to, as well. Do what you think makes your application stronger.

thor we’re back in the office now so you can call us or just email admissions@mit.edu

Can the Financial Aid employer form be sent via Fax?
If yes, on what number (the usual - 617-687-9184 ?) ?

Thanks in advance,
David Jutrsa

is Midyear Report available yet? It said that Jan 1st, the form will be available, but I still haven’t seen it.

@dakilica
I believe you can send it by scanning it and e-mailing it to the financial aid office’s address, which would be easier than faxing. Here’s the e-mail: finaid@mit.edu

@FRUITFLY
They said the midyear report will be available in January - not exactly on January 1. So it’ll be online sometime this month (as of now, it isn’t, though.)

midyear report will be out later this month. check mymit.

Chris, 3 weeks ago I have sent, via mail, a package containing my supplements and school forms (transcripts+evaluations). Today, I verified that my application tracking page has been updated and now shows the receivement of Evaluation A and B. Still, it does not confirm the receivement of Secondary School Report and Transcripts. Since my school stated everything was in the same package, I am a little concerned whether there was a problem with these documents. Should I be worried?

molliebatmit, I don’t think you understood my question. I was wondering if the adcoms would recognize Boys’ State (that I listed under summer activities) as a distinction, without having it specifically listed under the ‘non-scholastic awards’ category.

And I don’t really understand how I would go about sending something like that. Do I fax in certificates??

No, McGreggor said last year that the mailroom staff opens the envelopes and separates the documents by type, so it’s not unusual for some documents to update before others. (Note that, in any event, the answer to “Should I be worried about x document?” is always no.)

I meant that you could send a letter specifically noting that Boys’ State and your varsity letters were non-scholastic distinctions, if you want. I don’t think it’s necessary, but if you want to, you can send a short note just like anyone who wants to update an application. No need for proof, just a short letter.

don’t be worried - mollie is correct everything is disaggregated
