MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

Okay, but for other awards that you don’t specifically ask about, do you recognize most of them and if you didn’t would you look it up? For example, would adcoms know what “Honors National Chemistry Olympiad” and “JETS NEDC Semifinalist” are by just the names?

Yes, we would.

^ was that an answer to “would look it up”, or an answer to “would know what Chem olympiad is” or both?

both, I believe. I’ve heard/read admissions say they’ll google things if they need to.

Well I picked a bad example, the Chem olympiad. How about the other award?

Guys, the admissions office sees fifteen thousand applications every year from the top high school students in the country. If you have an award, it’s a good bet they’ve seen it before and are familiar with it. If you’re concerned, the section on the application for “anything else you’d like to tell us” would be a great place to further describe your awards.

Yep, it’s been “unofficially” available for a few days now, but that was while we worked the kinks out on the early adopters (relax, there weren’t any).

Go to http://my.mit.edu to login or apply!

If you have any questions about the **formal application/b, you may ask them here.

However, for my sanity, and the sanity of those around you, please exercise common courtesy, by which I mean really don’t make me whip out [Let me google that for you](http://lmgtfy.com/) for super easy questions that are found on our awesome website [MIT Admissions](http://mitadmissions.org). (I reserve the right to respond with a LMGTFY under exigent circumstances).

(cue bill nye voice - DID YOU KNOW THAT - we have a whole section of the website dedicated to answering your question about the application? it’s true! [MIT Admissions: Apply! How, When, Where…](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/menu.shtml))

To head two FAQs off at the pass:

Why can’t I apply right now??

Probably because you applied last year - even if you just started and saved one - and thus your old application is still in our system. You’ll have to wait until we purge the old data, and reapply in September.

I’m an International!

First of all, that’s not a question, that’s a declarative statement. Second, you can fill out the application, but you will only be able to check the box that says “Regular Decision”. We consider all international applicants at the same time in late February, and no matter how early you apply we won’t look at your folder until then.

Excited! I’m skipping work and going home now just so I can start :slight_smile:
p.s. not really. I’m waiting until 5:00 pm lol
p.p.s. FIRST!

On the website it says:

Does that mean the EC is see listed right now may potentially change? Even though I haven’t contacted yet, I want the keep the current interviewer.

It will probably not change.

^resilient193 - if you want your current interviewer for any reason, I would contact them ASAP. Things come up that can make it harder for interviewers to schedule later, and the interview’s not something that you’ll be better at later on; it’s pretty chill and relaxing. I contacted my interviewer early last year and I’m glad I did; friends of mine who contacted her later were not able to schedule interviews with her because she had exams. Instead they interviewed with someone else - while probably not a huge deal, if you want to keep your current interviewer, I’d contact early.

^ From what I’ve heard from a couple of interviewers, they prefer scheduling early to getting a flood of emails at the end. Not only does it mean they can space out the interviews, but they can space out writing the reports that are sent to MIT - spending much quality time with your report!

MITChris, I have a question. Has the application changed since last year? I’m trying to persuade a bunch of my younger friends to apply and I’m just curious.

Hi, I still cannot access the application, and I think it is due to the fact that I created my MyMIT account during the last admissions cycle. While I wait to access the application (the blog said it should be available in September for people like me), would anyone be kind enough to post the essay questions/ possibly even email me a copy of the pdfs so I can start the application before then?

Thanks

I second curiosostudent. Could someone please post the application questions?

In section 4 of part 2, it says

What if you took an AP exam without taking a class? Should you still put it there? I’m going with common sense and gonna put it there… but just to be sure.

The application is available?I am going to myMIT account and it says that the application will be online in late summer.Nothing else.

^ That means you started an application last year. I have the same problem… The wait till September is going to be a long one ><…

But Chris, is it ok if you could post the essay questions so those who do not have access to the application till September can at least get a head start on the essays?

I see…Thank you MrWheezy for the information.
Yes would be very helpful!:)

@inkling -

We changed one question this year - the creativity question now asks what personality trait you’re most proud of.

@everyone who can’t access the app -

I answered this question in the very first post of this thread.
