MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

As a US citizen you don’t fall into the ‘international’ bracket that was cited here. You will fall in with the other 16,000+ kids that apply with US citizenship or green cards.

According to Questbridge, if one is chosen to be a finalist, he/she must give official test scores (ex. SAT) by November 1 to MIT.

I have read that MIT accepts November SAT scores from early action applicants. Does this also apply if one applies EA via Questbridge?

Questbridge is actually a separate application process with its own deadlines. You hear back before EA and if you’re not a match, you have the option to roll over your application to EA. So, you can resubmit your scores to MIT for EA (I think) but you will need scores from before November for Questbridge.

I’m on the same boat as you. But wouldn’t the scores affect MITs decision if they should match you or not.
I’m doing SAT oct 1
ACT oct 22
And sat subject nov 5.
And application is due way before.

I’m still debating whether to do QuestBridge or not. If you do November test you can’t do early admission application at MIT only regular decision.

Not true – November tests are accepted at MIT for EA.

Can international transfers use Questbridge ?

No, Questbridge is a program for domestic freshman applicants.

Is it alright if I kind of know the EC already? like the mother of a kid who went to my school (but I’ve never talked to the EC).

I attend a prep school that rhymes with my user name (Exeter).
I have some testing questions:
Do I have to report my AMC scores? I didn’t take them with any intent of doing well, just for fun because I enjoy a challenge, and to gain more respect for the David Yang’s of the world (its ok to say his name, IMO gold medalist from Exeter).

Also this applies to U.S. History. Exeter’s standards are stringent, but they focus more on understanding the why than the where and what. Of hundreds of students in US history, only around 15 took the AP US test. I’m sure some of them did well, but received a 3 (my U.S. history course had only gone up to 1940 at that point, as we were writing our 15+ page research papers). I feel that the A- in the course I earned better showed my capabilities than the AP score.

I suppose my final question is: when self reporting scores is it acceptable to not report scores that we feel don’t reflect our abilities?
Thanks!

you do not have to report it.

Thanks so much for the quick reply!

Alrighty, so I do a lot of things, one of which is artwork. I was looking though the requirements for the art supplement, and it says to email photos of the artwork. In the emails you have to include your MyMIT number. I searched around the website but I couldn’t find my myMIT number…where can I possibly find it???

Thanks!

@ k4r3n2 So if we’re not matched and we roll over our QB applications to early application for MIT, we can’t send them our November scores?

Gee, if that’s the case, I’d rather just do EA then. :(

We can’t? Doesn’t MIT accept November Scores like ‘molliebatmit’ said?

I think you can still send your November scores if you get rolled over to EA, but obviously they won’t be counted with your QB application. But I’m not sure if you’ll find out if you’re matched before the November test date, so you might end up taking the test and then submitting the scores and then finding out if you really needed them after all.

The requirement for scores to be before November is from Questbridge. So if you don’t want to apply through QB, then you can take November test.

Important Information Regarding Test Scores

QuestBridge will accept any test scores that you receive prior to the National College Match application deadline of September 30, 2011. If you expect to receive scores after September 30, please list your testing date(s) on the “Testing Information” page of the application, leaving the score fields blank. If you are selected as a finalist and want to have your new test scores considered for the College Match process by the colleges you have ranked, you should request that the College Board and/or ACT forward your scores directly to those colleges. Any testing done after October will be considered only in the Regular Decision process.
If the colleges you are interested in require SAT Subject Tests and you have not yet taken them, you are still allowed to rank those colleges and can be selected as a finalist. You should plan to take the necessary tests in October and then submit the scores directly to the colleges for consideration in the College Match process if you are selected as a finalist. If you do not take the tests by October, you may keep the college(s) on your ranking list, but please be aware that your application may not receive full consideration by the college(s) for the College Match.

^ Yes, I think the question was “if I’m not matched with MIT and my application is rolled over to EA, can I submit November scores to MIT to be considered during EA in addition to my QuestBridge application”. I think that the answer to this is yes.

It sounds like QB won’t accept the application without a score by October test date for EA round.

So if one intends to take the test in November, QB will not accept them for EA.

I studied 9th and 10th grades in one school and then joined another school for 11th & 12th grades. In that case, can I submit two "Secondary School Report"s, one from my previous school and another from my current school?

That is, I am planning to send the following two :

 1. Transcripts for 9th and 10th grades and a letter from the counselor at my previous school.
 2. Transcripts for 11th grade, 12th mid-year report, and a letter from the counselor at my current school.

Is that OK?

Thanks.

Agreed to both – you must take tests in October or before for QB. But if you re-take in November, you could send that score to MIT to have it considered for EA if you’re not matched.
