MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

Question on the application - part 2 page 4 asks to list AP classes and scores. It displays 3 entries and has a more button but the button does nt seem to work.

Does anyone else have this problem?

On part 2 page 4, do we write which AP tests (self-studied) and which AP courses we will be taking in May 2012? If so, I suppose we leave the score blank and enter 05/2012?

^I think so. I have the problem that I’ll(or have already) be taking more than 12 AP exams. I guess I choose the “best” 12 and put the rest in the additional info section.

gethenian - Are you able to add more than 3 APs by using more button?

I know that the major doesnt affect your chances of admission, but does it affect the way that my application is viewed? For example, if i choose math as my major would the adcom pay more attention to my preparation in math as opposed to if i chose history as my major?

thanks!

no, not really

i’ve taken my programming class as part of the outreach program of a taiwanese university. it’s a legit class, but there’s no transcript and it’s only pass and fail. I have a certificate that says I passed the class. Should I send a copy of the certificate in place of a transcript for this class?

do you guys take more than 1 transcript? I’m full-time at one school and part-time in another and have some summer classes at universities…so yeahh…

@texaspg ^: yeah the more button lets me add more ap’s

When it asked if Physics was taken and if so what year, what should we answer if we have taken multiple physics classes? (honors 11th, ap physics 12th)

Hi,

I had unusual life circumstances that prevented me from graduating high school. Heck, I didn’t even finish middle school. I am currently in good standing at a community college, which I have been attending for the past three years, and I was wondering if a high school diploma is required to apply to MIT. Also, do I apply as a Freshman or as a Transfer ?

I am 20 years old and I do not have immigration papers, if that matters.

legotrain - we do not require a high school diploma, if you are in good standing at a CC you are eligible to become a transfer student.

How large of a percentage Native American must I be to warrant checking the box about me having an American Indian background? (would a fraction as small as 1/16 Native American count?)

You must be Native American “enough” to consider yourself Native American – if someone you had just met asked you what your ethnic background was, what would you answer?

At one point, MIT’s application asked for a tribal registration number for NA applicants, although I don’t know if this is true any longer.

I’m in a foreign school, and my teachers and counselor aren’t quite sure what to do once they’ve finished their recommendations and forms.

How do they send these to MIT?
Do my teachers pool all their letters into one large envelope/file, and then mail it by Fedex? Or do they individually send them?

If possible, please specify the size of the preferred envelope.

Thanks!

For the “additional courses” list, should we list only academic courses or other courses like art as well? And if we have taken a course for multiple years, must we list it multiple times or just specify the years we have taken it?
Finally, if a course level is “other”, such as gifted, should we mention it in the course title?
Thanks!

Either way is fine – your teachers can send their letters together, or they can send them separately. Whatever is easiest and most convenient for them.

The address to send the recommendations should be on the recommendation form (although I haven’t seen this year’s form). It’s also the address on the bottom of the admissions office website.

There is no preferred envelope size. Any size envelope is fine.

I was surprised to see that there is no ‘Educational Counselor’ in my area (6th largest city in the country). Can I rest assured that this won’t hurt me at all? Is there any way to interview outside my area?

Phoenix? Well, there probably aren’t that many ECs who live in Arizona…

Is it still true that there is no advantage to going the EA route? MIT is my first choice but if there are some Single Choice EA schools that will give some preference to applicants in that pool does it make more sense to apply RD to MIT? I don’t want to risk hurting my chances at MIT since it’s my first choice.

On part 2 of the application it states, “List Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or A-level or O-Level courses taken or under way. (If you have taken the test, please list date and score”. How big of an impact will our scores have on our admittance? If I got a 3 on an AP exam should i just not submit the score or is it not a big deal?
