MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

If I become a finalist for Questbridge, and I still want to apply early action, can I use the same QB application for both the scholarship and MIT early action?

Thank you in advance!

You cannot apply early action to any school if you ranked any schools for a match.

Oh, okay.

Thank you!

I know that MIT is need blind but do kids able to pay full fare get any extra points?

The whole point of need-blind is that a student’s ability to pay is NOT taken into consideration in admissions.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :p

Chris may have a different opinion, but my advice would be to note (or to have your counselor note) that the grades won’t be available until early December, then send them along when they are available.

It is useful to be highly accomplished. Beyond that, it’s impossible to quantify the effect of a single factor.

If you’re not matched with MIT, your application will automatically be rolled over to MIT EA. It’s possible to not be matched with MIT via QB, but to get in EA.

No, your ability or lack of ability to pay has no bearing on whether you will be admitted. The admissions office will not even be aware whether you are able to pay full fare or not – they are totally separate from the financial aid office.

molliebatmit, would you mind if I asked you something in a PM? I promise I’d try to keep it as short as possible.
…I’d be really really grateful if you agreed.

On QB, it says that we need to turn in new scores, information, etc. to the schools we listed by November 1. Can I still give November SAT scores via QB to MIT even though the site says to turn everything in by Nov. 1?

When I copy and paste my essays into the application from Microsoft Word (on a Mac, in Safari and Firefox), everything pastes in normally. However, wherever I put certain punctuation (ie. apostrophe, quotation marks), the symbol (a white question mark with black diamond around it) shows up in their place the next time I go to view the editing page for the essays. On the print preview, my punctuation does not show up (neither do the weird symbols). If i manually insert the punctuation into the MIT app (rather than on Word), it shows up.

that’s what happens to me too. it’s just that we’re transferring between different systems with different formats. You’ll have to delete the symbols and just put in the punctuation.

Also, it was said that it is OK to use contractions?

MIT accepts either SAT or ACT. If you took both, do you need to list both on the app or just the better one?

App asks for details of your 5 most important non-class activities. What if you only have 4? Basically, what little time is left after homework and those 4 activities is spent on TV or XBox.

just list the better one.

just list 4.

You can ask, but I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to answer.

Just to outline my general policy, for everyone’s information:

 1. I tend not to answer questions on which I have no insight.
 2. I work about twelve hours a day, and answering PMs is not always high on my list of priorities.
 3. I strongly prefer to answer questions in public, on the threads. And I read all of the threads in this forum. If you’re concerned about privacy, you could change some details or ask “for a friend” – whatever – but if you have a question, chances are that other people do, too, and if you ask in public, everyone can benefit.
 4. I do not, under any circumstances, read essays.

Should we report our grade for each class as weighted or unweighted on Part II? The transcript that my school sends to MIT will contain weighted grades.

My son applied EA and contacted EC for an interview early October. He heard back from EC shortly afterwards, then nothing, so he emailed again on Oct 11. EC said not to worry, he is arranging an interview. There has been no communication since then. Should he just keep waiting? Or send another email? Son does not seem nervous, but I am.

I think your son should call the EC.
How is your EC ‘arranging’ an interview without communication with your son?

today as the nominal deadline by which to schedule an interview, so if you haven’t heard anything back by the end of the weekend, i’d contact the EC again. but i wouldn’t be too nervous - the interview could happen next week or the week after and it’d still be fine.

“I think your son should call the EC.

He did call the number provided on Oct 11 and left a voice message (this was in addition to the email). Then he got the email reply that said ‘don’t worry, you contacted me before the deadline, you’re ok, I’m arranging your interview’.

Just saw your message Chris, ok thanks.
