MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

imagineer - where are you getting your numbers? The early admits were 770 out of 6400 last year and the number of applicants is lower this year at 6100.

That blog post is from 2006. The numbers are not accurate. Nor is it of any use trying to prognosticate.

You’re up awfully late, Chris! Probably because you’re so excited about the surprise decision release on Monday, right? ;)

hey MITChris and Mollie if you are listening i have a question …

Since there are almost 1000 students applying from India and MIT only choosing almost 5 or 6 utmost … now according to my math , since almost every IXO medal winner will apply , there will be atleast what say 20 Medal winners each year and say 15 to the least will be applying or to minimize it to lowest possible figure ,take it as 10 … That means you are only gonna take the medal winners right ?? … i mean taking last year facts MIT only chose those lucky 4 who had a medal in an IXO Olympiad … !!! … Does this means that everyone else doesn’t have a chance ??? … i mean obviously MIT will take the best … but will it be always a medal winner ??? … and please dun answer me generally … i request you to keep the above given context in mind and then present me with you genuine opinion cuz the facts above are right to the best of my knowledge !!! (although i know only 2 are stated but i always wanted to say this   ) !!

Hi… I’ve got some more questions, I guess…

First, does the teacher rec. have to be hand-written? Or printed one with the teacher’s signature and on the school’s paper is all right, too?

Second thing, in my educational system, grade 9 is completed at a different school than grades 10, 11, 12. Should I attach my grades from grade 9, as well? How about distinctions I won during grade 9?
The 9th grade kinda belongs to middle school over here, something like that, so I’m not sure.

Thank you! :)

By the way, is it really bad to see the recommendation? I have no desire to pry into the contents of the letter and the form, but it’s just much easier, because I’m an international, and the form has to be translated etc.
I thought it doesn’t really matter, but I saw on the forum that we’re not supposed to see the rec and it got me thinking…
How about additional recs?

No. I don’t know how many more times I can answer this question, as I have answered it on several threads in the past week alone.

Whether or not it is true that last year, all Indian admits had an international olympiad medal, this does not imply that it is necessary to have an international olympiad medal to be admitted.

A computer-written recommendation with a signature on school paper is totally fine.

Waiving your right to see the recommendation letter is not the same as not seeing the letter now. The waiver is there because, if you are admitted to and attend MIT, you have a right under US law to see your educational records.

Overall, it is better to have letters that are confidential – that are genuine because the teacher can write what she/he feels without consequences. But if your teacher is fine with you seeing the letter after it was written, then I don’t see the problem.

Hello there!
I had a doubt regarding the MIT application. i cant seem to tick my ethnicity in the Part 1 of my application. It does not save. I have tried many browsers. Should I leave it blank? Thanks!

@iamthebist - me and another post ask this question, and Chris said the MIT ethnicity thing in part 1 is for US only, so if ur an international, it will not save…

At least that’s how i get it…
 anyway, gl

@coolkh - thanks! i was quite worried :slight_smile:
good luck to you too!

@iamthebist … dude what was wrong with my suggestion ??? you only wanna listen to some MIT official right ?? … toooppppeeerrrss

when are the decisions coming out?

@monkey: they will announce when the decisions come out on Monday. The decisions will come out sometime after that.

Hi,

I’ve submitted a supplemental document from my research supervisor. Is there any way to confirm it has been received? I emailed admissions more than a week ago but they didn’t reply.

^ no

Admissions is super busy right now. You’ll just have to trust :-)

^ super like the response crazymom !!!

Hello!

I’m an Indian student in Std.8 and aspire to go to MIT. I have a few questions which weren’t clarified.

I love making small-scale applications/softwares, but there are rarely any contests in India to show the talent regarding our work. So how can we show our talent of app making instead of contest-wins? Where in the application form can we mention our software creations?

I’ve been a winner in many regional competitions (or city-level), but I’ve heard that being an International student, just the high national & international level qualifications are counted. Is it true?

Please answer both my questions, and please try to elaborate if you can.

Thank you for the answers molliebatmit :)

I guess I should ask about the 9th grade directly at the mit admissions?

Quick Question.

I sent my new EC an e-mail 5 days ago. No reply yet.

Thing is, I have his phone number, but it is not provided in my MyMIT account, I found it through… other means.

Should I use it to contact him?

… no. You should only provide your EC through the means they want to be contacted, which is what your MyMIT account provides you with.

That would probably be best. I think they do typically want to see 9th grade results, even for people whose schools/educational systems do things differently, but I’m not sure.

There is a space on the application specifically for you to talk about something you’ve created, actually.

No, it’s not true.
