MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

you should type your award description and fax it asap, assuming EA decisions are still being finalized.

@akashdip … dude i agree with ur point totally … but as Mollie said that the admission officers look at us w.r.t. our school and other context in minds … even though i managed to score a 89% in XI still i would say that i get frustrated especially when the teachers say that our score limit is 70% so that “you dun get overconfident for your board examinations”. … but i really guess it hard that now it is a high time for anyone to get things change … moreover have you thought of doing anything about it ???

P.S. -
thanks for the complement over the username !! … although i know that’s a childish thing to keep this name

@mollie what if the competition is tomorrow ?

^ mollie said that Friday would be too late. As well, my guess would be that they would not receive it until Monday. Please recognize that a single competition result will not make or break your application. Good luck tomorrow.

89% in class 11!!! im feeling weak in my knees…
in my school class 11 is the toughest. i topped my class of nearly 150 students with only 80.6% and my friends think im great! looks like they know nothing of anything(stupid phrase i know). here if you get above 70% or even 65% its like oh let me kiss the hem of your robes. comparing this to our u.s. counterparts i feel really mad.

like i said my teachers give no valid reason for cutting marks. i have been trying to change this from class 10. no use, they are all very stubborn about not giving marks. not even in science. there was once this question in chemical bonding, Why is SiO2 solid while CO2 is gas?. i gave my best answer explaining all the orbital overlapping and gave a nice diagram for both structures, but still got only 2 outta 3. when i asked our teacher, he was like * whats your problem? you got 2 out of 3. you should be happy. your answer is perfect.. and i was like sir if my answer is all right then why not 3 out of 3?. to this he replied * 3 out of 3? thats not a part of the marking scheme. even if you were Lavoisier himself, i cant give you full marks. its as simple as that. now what could you possibly do with teachers like that!

@crazymonster alright (:

well even my school is the toughest competitor in the “country” … i have a fellow named Jaspreet Singh in my class , he is the first one in Indian history to have cleared IChO in XI class itself (i only managed to compete till the national level that time ) and secured 14th rank in KVPY in XI ( i did 38)… and even he got only 91.5% in the school , so yes i think that i did very good .

and exactly the point i was coming to that even acc. to wikipedia … a 65% here is a straight A+ over in U.S. , but i dun think that these all things have to be explained to MIT guys … i mean surely they are much much more experienced than us .And also , many indians have applied before us so i think that they would understand our context in that way … right ?? … ( i am expecting any MIT associate will help us around here. )

and to conclude , man u r a topper … i would never explain SiO2 with “orbital overlapping” … becuz i think there is no need to get in that deep … and yes your teacher at least gav you 2 … mine would give me a 0.5 of 3 … why ?? … cuz i didn’t write the “keyword” what “she” was “expecting” to see in “my” answer !!!

Hi, I was wondering if I could submit my optional essay by fax as a supplement or something since it doesn’t fit the space? Thanks.

If it doesn’t fit the space, they hard truth of the matter is they probably don’t want to read it. You certainly could, but unless it’s of paramount importance, cut it down to fit.

Yes, I’m absolutely serious. The admissions officers (and I’m not one, just an alum) are professionals, and they spend a lot of time getting acquainted with school systems from across the world. The counselor’s report that your school puts together is also helpful for understanding your school environment.

I would also tend to say that now is too late, alas. But there’s no harm in sending it, if you feel it will be helpful – the worst-case scenario is that they aren’t able to consider the information, but that’s the same outcome as if you don’t send it in the first place.

If deferred, you can most certainly send the information as an update for your RD application, of course.

Hey I was just wondering, in committee, do you view our apps electronically or do you print out a hard copy and look at it?
In the blogs, there are a lot of pictures of adcoms with folders (aka hard copy) but I know there’s been a movement towards electronic docs?

kk … so umm is it ok if my Principal attach a letter with the school profile describing any such thing i mean grading system of the level of competition cuz since we dun have any counselor ,he is really wants to put a correct image of my context in front of the admission office ?? but will the Officers accept it ??

guys i know this is a stupid question, but what exactly is a “school profile”?
i dont think my school can provide me with one, i need to know the details about it so that i could ask my principal to make me one. please help me

@kamehameha :smiley: however hard may i try, ive never understand which specific “keywords” my teachers need to give me a decent marks… looks like whichever word i miss to write in my answer script, they term it as the “keyword” :D

@molliebatmit and what is this counselor’s report? i mean apart from the courses offered like AP, IB, HP and stuff(which my school doesnt offer), what else does it include so that the adcoms understand the situation in my school?

@akashdip … dude same situation is with me … all they keep telling me is that u just read foreign author books looks Morrison Boyde or Solomons (which are by far most fantastic books i have ever gone through) and neglect NCERT which is a student’s Gita and Bible both … !!! … and as far as i understand , school profile is brochure or prospectus of a school … and literally even i dunno anythin about the counselor’s report … where did u get this term anyway ??

I just got off the phone with my EC and he told me that he can not take my interview because he is busy. I mailed admissions@mit.edu to assign me a new EC but I am a little worried because tomorrow is the last date to schedule the interview. Is it a very strict rule? Or can I get a few more days to schedule my interview?

@kamehameha & akashdip

I’m also an international applicant and I used to get the same “keyword” talk in school when teachers mince my marks. That’s why maths is awesome, no keywords xD

In my school over 70% in 9th and 10th and over 60% in 11th and 12th were remarkable achievements.

heyy u guys … dun think that mah school is sumthin different … even “it” is CBSE affiliated so the same marking scheme is out there … !!! … and yeh @Smiley19 … Maths is so so cool in that sense … but I always got 98 on the lower side and 99 on the higher … why ?? … becuz i always did a 6 mark question in 4-5 steps … :smiley: … JEE version …hahaha

^ super true.

can anyone give me an estimate how many indians are applying to MIT this year or how many had applied last year? so i can get a correct estimation of whether i have a chance or not(considering about 5-10 indians get accepted every year). thanks.:)

i would stake for about a 1000 !!! … but i dun think anyone can give u the facts for i dun think the admissions office keep track on no. of applicants !!! but nevertheless … it would be awesome if someone could provide the stats !! …

[Early Action | MIT Admissions](Early Action | MIT Admissions)

Does the “[commitment] to admitting no more than 30% of our class during early action” still apply this year?

1,465 students were admitted last year, therefore approximately 440 students were admitted through early action. With the 3,000 and some early applicants last year, the early action acceptance rate was around 13%. However, if only 30% of this year’s accepted class comes from the 6,000 early applicants (and a class roughly equivalent to last year’s is accepted), then only 7% of early applicants will be accepted.

Are the acceptance rates expected to halve this year?
