MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

molliebatmit, you said earlier that
“MIT does accept supplemental material, and you can send it through about the end of the month of January. They prefer that you send this material as an update along with your Mid-Year Report, but it could be faxed as well.”
Does this mean I could send an arts supplement and/or add’l recommendations throughout January also?
Thanks!

Thank you.

Can he fax the secondary school report now but the transcripts and school profile a couple of days later since the office is closed for new year’s eve?

So, if you send in everything by the January deadline, it will definitely be considered by the committee. Updates you make past that point don’t have this guarantee – and the longer you wait, the less likely it’ll get there on time for consideration. If you have something you want to submit (like an art portfolio), it’s in your best interest to submit it now. But if you get an update (say, you win an award at the end of January, or even in February), you might as well send that in too.

My school’s first semester doesn’t end until literally the end of January, so I will not have official Midyear Grades available until early-mid December. In this case, it is acceptable for a later submission, correct?

^ Ah, yes, I should’ve mentioned that midyear grades are expected to come in at all sorts of times because schools end their first term at different times. My response was more geared towards art supplements or additional recommendations.

@ molliebatmit . thanks so much for your reply. I have another question. MIT only requires to put one math and one science sat subject test scores on the application. Does this means that scores of only those two tests are looked upon? . Does sending scores( 750 + ) on subject tests, in addition to the mandatory two, boast applicants chances of admission or are they ignored? . Simply put, is that right that college board score reports are used by colleges to only confirm the scores on the application and only the scores on application are actually used in the admission process?
Thanks!

Do the adcoms review our application along with the application of other friends of same school?

Hi, I have a problem with the TOEFL scores
I sat for the pbt on November 12th
And the scores were mailed directy to you and 3 other colleges
But I still haven’t receievd my report nod did you report receiving it!
I tried contacting TOEFl services and even the scores by phone service but in vain !!
Do youy think that it will get to the schhols before the tests deadlines!
I amreally scare
Any idea what should I do ?

Yes, you can send additional material through about the end of January. I agree with Piper that earlier is better – applications will begin being read as soon as all the required components are in, so in order to maximize the chances of your updates being seen by most readers, you should send them in soon.

Correct. Your highest math score and your highest science score are what is considered when evaluating your application.

No, MIT does not read or discuss applicants by region or school (or any other criterion).

Hi! I have a quick question about the midyear report. My semester grades will be available in early January, so I’ll be able to submit them relatively soon. However, I also have a competition that I expect to do well in at the end of January.

Should I wait until the end of January to submit the Midyear report with the contest results, or should I send it in earlier and then fax/mail in the contest results later?

Thanks!

@molliebatmit .Sorry for bothering you again. So am i right in that taking subject tests, in addition to the mandatory two, wont boost chances(assuming they are all excellent scores) since additional scores are not taken into admission calculations. Thanks!

@molliebatmit

I submitted my supplementary materials by fax but then it said due to overload the fax was rerouted to a different number. It reached the new number but I wanted to be sure it arrived safe at MIT so I mailed it in as well. I wrote a note explaining the fax reroute.

Is this okay? Will you guys just disregard one of them?

It’s up to you – either way would be acceptable.

Right. As I said before, only the top math and top science score are taken into consideration. Other scores are not considered.

I’m sure this is fine, although you almost certainly didn’t need to send in a paper copy.

I submitted my MIT app however I requested for a fee waiver which I am yet to submit. Will my application not be accepted if I do not pay or submit my fee waiver request before the deadline? How exactly should I request for a waiver? I tried contacting the Admission Office for a very long time but I have not received any reply.

Around what time are the applications read through and judged? Because I was thinking, I want to work on a certain project and then update on my midyear report, so is the midyear report taken into serious consideration or are just the grades looked at?

It’s my understanding that the request for the fee waiver can arrive after submission of the application, but I’m not entirely sure how it works. More information on applying for a fee waiver can be found here: [Does MIT Offer Application Fee Waivers? | MIT Admissions](Does MIT Offer Application Fee Waivers? | MIT Admissions)

The midyear report is considered as an integral piece of the application, and anything included in the MYR will be considered by admissions.

The admissions officers will be reading applications from ~next week until ~Valentine’s Day, then will go into selection committee in mid-February.

Alright, I’m freaking out. Part one of the application will not submit (dreaded error message). It also refuses to validate and I get the dreaded error message for page 2. Is there anything I can do other than file a report? Or am I out of luck on this one?

I submitted everything today… it’s nice to be done. Huge thanks to molliebatmit and MITChris for answering so many questions, and good luck to everyone else applying!

@HLLivingLoco - Check your word limits? What is the error message?

Hi,
I am on Part 1, page 1. Whenever I click on page 2, I get this message:

The system is truly awesome in many ways, but clearly this isn’t one of them.
You should let us know that what you tried didn’t work by submitting a report, or go back and try something else.

Report this Error Details
org.springframework.webflow.engine.ActionExecutionException: Exception thrown executing [AnnotatedAction@2ce20cdd targetAction = edu.mit.ua.web.ApplicationPart1FormAction@6b3d3bb7, attributes = map[‘method’ -> ‘setupReferenceForSection2’]] in state ‘doSection2’ of flow ‘applicationPart1-flow’ – action execution attributes were ‘map[‘method’ -> ‘setupReferenceForSection2’]’; nested exception is java.lang.NullPointerException

So I finished up all the other pages (BTW, I made a first pass at all the pages before, so it’s not like page 2 hasn’t been filled out yet). When I go to page seven and try to click on “Proceed to Payment” I get:

Well that wasn’t supposed to happen

The system is truly awesome in many ways, but clearly this isn’t one of them.

There seems to be some sort of database error with my record. I reported the error. At this point I was able to print the draft version of my application. I scanned all the pages and will email them to admissions@mit.edu and FAX a copy as well. I don’t know what else to do.
