MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

I have sent inmy application parts, but I can’t send my school report and evaluations yet. My teachers completed the COMMONAPP reports online, and sent the print previews to me, but they haven’t signed them and there aren’t any stamps on them! School reopens next week! Do I really need the signatures to send via fax? After all, my teachers had to use their mail accounts to complete the commonapp reports; isn’t that verification enough? And if I have to include the signs, can I send the stuff on Jan 5? Please help, desperate here!

Hmm… I have more subjects to fill in in the midyear report than the thing permits me O.O Should I just leave out the ones I find the least important? (the ones with lowest grades? ).
I believe MIT has my midyear grades anyway, as they were sent with the Secondary School Report…

Also, if I forgot to expain some circumstance in my application, but do so in midyear report, will it be considered equally with the rest? Or do the essays have more weight than some short explanation squeezed in midyear report?

Just a quick question - If I did a self-study class with a teacher at my school and it showed up last year on my transcript but not this last semester (due to lack of time to meet, though I did still do it and am continuing this semester) what should I put on my midyear report? I had listed it as a class for this year on my application. Mainly - should I not list it at all or list it without a grade (and explain why in either case)?

In past years, RD admits have not received tubes.

International admissions are really tough at MIT – there is a quota set by higher-ups at MIT on the number of international students who can be admitted, so the admission rate is very low (around 3-5%). More information can be found here.

The signatures should probably be included. Sending tomorrow will be fine – just get the letters in as soon as possible.

I would vote for leaving out the least important ones – the ones that are not math/science-related. But it’s up to you to decide.

This questions has been asked by several people recently, and I’m not sure how to answer. I mean, your midyear report will be read by the application readers in the same way (and at the same time, if possible) as the rest of your application. It’s not that the midyear report is more or less important, or considered, than the rest of your application – it’s just another application piece.

I wouldn’t list it at all if you didn’t get a grade for it last semester.

Since I did list it on my application, though, I should still explain it, right?

Thank you, molliebatmit
In the end, who cares how I’m doing in my native language? :D

Ah, I think you actually answered my question =) If the midyear report is going to be read at the same time that the rest of my application, then it’s all good I believe =) (and, yes, I saw the words “if possible” but I’m going to be optimistic ^^’ )

molliebatmit or Chris,

My son filed a midyear report with MIT yesterday. I am the homeschool parent/counselor. Do I also file a midyear report and mail you his midyear transcripts? I can’t remember. :-(

i am a legal resident student filing for admittance into MIT. Are my chances of getting into the school going to be the same or harder because i am legal resident compared to a citizen?

My transcripts, with the secondary report and evaluation A were posted over a week ago, and I checked with the courier people whether they were received by MIT, which apparently they were.

But they still aren’t showing as processed when everything else is on mymit tracking page. I’m beginning to get anxious… how long should I wait before contacting the admissions office?

Just list it/not list it/explain in the least confusing way possible.

Chris should correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the mid-year grades are all student-reported.

Permanent residents are considered equivalent to US citizens for the MIT admissions process.

You should wait until the admissions office posts the blog entry saying they are done sorting all the mail (which will probably be in two weeks or so). And you should read [this thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/1266279-rd-applicants-please-read.html).

Thank-you, Mollie!

@atomicbaseball - I got accepted EA and I listed a self-studied class in my self-reported grades section as “<class name=”"> (self-studied)" with “N/A” in the grade slot. I didn’t (and MIT apparently didn’t, either) think it needed any further explanation, but, since our circumstances are undoubtedly different, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind an explanation anyway, if you think it would help. I hope that helps.</class>

My teacher recs and school forms are still not showing up… :frowning: when should they all be on?
Thanks!

@bonnieblue: I’m pretty sure that one of the admissions counselors will make an announcement (most likely on the blogs) whe they have finished processing all the papers they recieved. Until then, don’t worry
(this is what they did for EA)

Hi,
When i apply for financial aid, should I just fill all the forms electronically on the website ([Deadlines & Requirements | MIT Admissions](How to apply for aid | MIT Admissions)). Or is there anyway I can do it from myMIT?

Thanks!

Will the admissions officers wait for us to submit the MYR before our applications are read (or reread for deferred)?

umm well this is kind of an odd question … but does the Financial Aid package offered by MIT includes travel budgets for those who cannot afford it (specifically international) ???

No worries – MIT is still sorting through all the mail they’ve received. Please read [this thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/1266279-rd-applicants-please-read.html) for more information.

Most of the forms are federal forms (CSS Profile, FAFSA) that aren’t “owned” by MIT. And tax forms should be sent to the financial aid office. The financial aid office’s website is [here.

As far as I know, applications will begin to be read as they’re complete, and completeness does not include the MYR. So some readers will definitely see your MYR, but others likely won’t.

Yes – see this page](<a href=“MIT Student Financial Services”>MIT Student Financial Services) for more information.

kk THANKS A tonne mollie … and umm one more question … I gave my second set of examinations ( school follows a quarter based system) in December so i have my results out and Grades are with me … but i have one more set of examination (ongoing currently) and i will have the grades from this one in late January (say something around 22nd to 25th) … so what grades am i supposed to enter in my MYR ?? and the space which asks for the current achievements … if i have some space left after listing the achievements out and jokes and all … can i use it to explain some circumstances (not specific but some general one) to admission officers like in the form of an essay or something ??

I am an international applicant. I am going to take TOEFL on 14th of Jan. If I send my TOEFL score after result comes out (I think it is about 24th of Jan), will admission receive my score in time?
550 on Critical reading section, 590 on Writing section on SAT (without taking TOEFL) can meet language proficiency requirement at MIT?
