MIT FAQ for application year 2012-2013

If my parents have decided to live separately (I live with my mom), but have never been legally separated, what should I put down for parents’ marital status?

When i print my application’s preview, I see that one part in the application is blank. It’s the short essay:“please tell us more about your cultural background and identity in the space below”. I check the validation button and it says I had fill all the required sections. I can’t understand how can that short answer doesn’t appear on my application’s pages. I check all ten parts and i still don’t know where that short answer is. Can anyone explain it to me? Thank you guys a lot in advance

This question is on the first part of the application.

I printed the Application Part I’s preview and i don’t see any things that related to that question. And in section 1 of part II doesn’t have that question too.

That essay appears with the other essays in Part II.

Have a look at page 1 of the first part ;)

I think the problem is that the form of “cultural background” essay is in the Application Part I, and is not designated as required form. It passes the validation if it was blank and never appears on the Part I preview.

And I found out that we can’t edit the “cultural background” essay after the submission of the Part I…
Does anyone know the way?

Try previewing the PDF of Part II. It should be with the other essays.

Do you think that MIT can admit an international student with a not so high sat score… taking into consideration that this school’s curriculum is not so strong?

There is a thread here on CC where accepted MIT students (EA) have posted their SAT scores, activities and accomplishments. Most of the accepted students list more than the 5 awards and 5 extracurriculars which are allowed in the MyMIT online application. Some of these accepted students have 8-10 ac tivities and/or awards listed.

My question is, how do they squeeze them all onto the MyMIT application, when there are only 5 lines for 5 activities? Do they just put “Math” as an activitiy, and then list all Math-related activities in the “description of activity” box?

Otherwise, I don’t know how they list them all - maybe on a supplemental page that gets faxed in?

There are separate sections for activities and then awards. I think the activity section gives you 5 activities with a 40-word explanation/overview, but then another section of the application for awards allows 5 scholastic awards and 5 non-scholastic awards. Those do not necessarily need to overlap, so I guess it is possible to have 15 unique things.

You can also list anything else not incorporated into the application in the optional additional information section at the end of Part II; however, that shouldn’t be used as a laundry list for activities. MIT specifically asks for 5 because they want to know what is most important to the applicant.

If they’re legally married, you should put “married”. If you would like, you can explain in the additional information section that your parents live apart.

Yes.

That’s one option, and some people choose to do this.

The applicant profiles on the results thread aren’t necessarily reflective of what people actually put in their MIT applications, just of what they did in high school. If someone lists more than five activities in the CC results thread, it’s because he did more than five activities, not necessarily because he listed all of those activities on the MIT application.

Hi Mollie,

I am applying to MIT through Questbridge and after the Match Round, I was rolled over to RA. My application has essentially been locked since September because MIT takes the QB application.

Would it be accepted if I sent in an update (like the additional essay on the MIT application) that highlights a more direct match with MIT since my essays were written from a more general standpoint to a scholarship committee? If I send this additional essay along with some supplementary materials, do you think it will be considered?

Hello,

I have just submitted my MIT application. The dashboard shows that my scores haven’t been received. Should I submit my scores again?

Thank you.

You are welcome to send any updates or additional materials that you feel will add to your application. MIT will consider all supplemental materials.

You had your scores sent officially, right? Assuming you had them sent to MIT through the SAT or ACT directly, then you do not need to resend them. It can take 2-3 weeks this time or year for processing those things.

hello… i just submitted my application several hours late due to several problems today. on my tracking list , part 1, part2 and testing requirements are checked.

will my application be processed?
should i email admissions and tell them of my late application ?

thanks for the help.

It’s fine. They are flexible due to the server downtime over the past two days.

: ) thanks, great relief!
So do you think it is not necessary to not email admissions and tell them why I was late?

Do not email them, it’ll just bring more attention to a very small mistake.
