okay..my choices are
1. Mc Cormick
2. Simmons(a bit wavery after i heard bt cleaning bathrooms)
3. Next
4. Burton corner

the only wheelchair-bound student i know of lives a few floors up from me; you may want to factor in that simmons is also really bloody far from classes.

as for the food, you may not care quite so much if you're not as financially strapped as me, but i find it rather overpriced and only middling quality, as well as inconvenient. i get by fine buying groceries and cooking for myself, which comes out to ~$25/week, maybe, depending on how you shop. and i don't consider ramen edible. i do hit anna's maybe once a week, often with friends or while in an incredible hurry, and b/c they're good'n'cheap.

Goddess: where do you live? Simmons doesn't seem to be any further from class than the other dorms that were pointed out to me as accessible (Baker, maybe). 'Course, once you're in the corridor ...

oh, i thought i'd mentioned it..somewhere...i live in senior haus. we have ramps and an elevator, and are much closer than simmons and baker.

you live in senior haus? I was just there visiting a friend a few days ago!

That's interesting ... I was lead to believe that none of the EC dorms were accessible. Guess I'll have to pull out my maps, maybe make some phone calls. BTW: do you know the student in the wheelchair? And if so, could you have them email me so I can ask some questions (iansmith@gmail.com)?

I actually skipped out on stuff that happened at Simmons during CPW cuz I didn't want to walk that far. =D

As for me, so far I'm only really considering New House. No worries, I'm not that closed-minded. It's just my favorite of the ones I've seen so far, taking into consideration thay I only visted BC, New, Next, McCormick, Random and Simmons. Which means I'm missing Senior, EC, Baker, Bexley, and MacGregor...

Ahhh why are there so many dorms and why must they all be so different?! Hey at least I made it past the 1/2 mark!
waits impatiently for all that junk we get from the admissions office in May

Goddess: What's Anna's? Do you ever eat at Sunny's?

Anna's Taqueria ( http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2005/taqueria.html ), in the Student Center.

I'll be in EC or Senior Haus=) I quite liked both of them when I went to MIT for RSI. Living there'll allow me to wake up later and sprint for classes!

Has anyone been to EC recently? Is the grand piano still in the Talbot Lounge, and has the D-flat key been repaired? I remember it being permanently depressed into the keyboard 2 years ago=P

the piano's still there, no idea about the status; if you move in, you can poke at housecomm to have it repaired, of course.

magefile: i'm working on it. no guarantees, tho.

portlander: did i see you, and/or do i know who you were staying with?

and in general, i recommend visiting as many dorms as possible, since they can be quite different in tone and atmosphere. if you didn't manage it during cpw, that's fine, that's what rush is for. use the i3 info to get a general picture, but you probably shouldn't use it to rule out any options (unless you feel really strongly about something) until you get here and start exploring.

goddess: I'm not sure. My friend is the one with really, really long blonde hair, and she's, I think, on the 4th floor. =) That's the best description I can give of her..hahaha! She's also from Oregon.

from way back in this thread, about Next House:

"most of the people there are first-years."

"do you consider this a benefit? do a lot of freshmen?"

I don't even know if this is a true statement about Next (I've never lived there), but if so I'd probably consider it a negative, rather than a benefit. Personally, I found that having lots of interaction with upperclassmen was super valuable my frosh year. They can tell you what classes to take and which professors are good/bad, and are the best ones to go to for help on psets. Of course it's also good to have other frosh around to do psets with, I'm just saying a good balance of frosh/upperclassmen is beneficial. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Will the mail packet (not the i3) tell us about the personality and facilities of each of the dorms?

it is true about either next or new house, i can never remember which, tho i suspect next, b/c new has the cultural houses and thus skews oddly in demographics; one of them has some crazy stat like %70 freshmen, at least my year. anecdotally, from friends who've lived there, it's b/c many people pledge and move out their second year. i also would've found it intensely obnoxious to be around so many people in my year, but i'm admittedly a little atypical about such things. this is why i'm asking the incoming folks, if they have a different outlook on such things and why.

as i recall, tho this was a bit of a while ago, all the i3 info comes with the big packet, along with info on student groups, administrative offices, and all sorts of student life info.

leely888, you can get a bit of info about each of the dorms online already ( http://web.mit.edu/housing/undergrad/ for the undergrad housing site, http://web.mit.edu/housing/undergrad/residences.html for details about each of the individual residences). The housemasters' blurb for each residence gives you a bit of a snapshot about their personalities.

The huge freshman percentage is becoming much less pronounced than it used to be. At one point a large percentage of Next House residents were freshman. This was due to the fact that Simmons just opened up that year, and a ton of upperclassmen left for Simmons. That created a vaccuum that year, causing lots of freshman to enter the following year. Now that everything is settling down, there are a more upperclassmen with each successive year. This upcoming year, Next House should be little different than other dorms with respect to freshman population.

i think simmons and mccormick are the cleanest dorms. i heard next house was pretty clean, but don't live there if you're claustrophobic. don't rank mccormick #1 if you are male, i don't think they will let you live there.

Next House isn't cramped, lol. I was in a part of New House though, and those were definitely narrow hallways. :P

Do most dorms have a sink in each room?
