The email is sent by the MAS admission office.

I don't think professors will have problem giving again reference letters if you are really good student. + your reco letters are needed just to confirm that you are a normal person. ( being a chemical engineering undergraduate student all my letters were from chemical engineering professors though they all are excellent people and i had research experience with all of them)

Still should I expect an admit, since I havent found any international admit posted ?? Or should I prepare the worst Nightmare ?
Anyone please let me know other schools doing similar research as "Fluid Interfaces" and "Hig Low Tech" ...

I guess CMU HCI, Stanford D school do similar kind of research.
However i observed that Media Lab expects you to be revolutionary in your work. for example i came across portfolio of Pranav mistry whose sixth sense device is currently a rage.
http://www.pranavmistry.com/files/pranav_portfolio.pdf
If you look at work he has done before you can easily tell that why he is in Media Lab.
+ he got admitted 3 years after undergraduate degree. His GPA was not 4.0/4.0
I have seem many ppl who did MSin CS or EE and later got admitted to Media lab.
Another possibility is that you can take a year long break for internship relevant to your group and then apply again. like this guy Ashwani Kumar - LinkedIn

Thanks Godhelp ...
Has anyone heard of international admit to media lab ... aaah I am only curious .. I havent seen a single post for international admit so far

congrats hiy … why are they so late in processing ? Is this group specific ?
U got mail from prof of Affective computing (the one who interviewed u )

could you guys help answer a few questions?

when you apply to the media lab, you apply for an MS/PhD degree in media arts and sciences that is research-heavy, but what coursework does this require? do i have to take the media lab courses (fairly non-rigorous) or can i focus on courses that traditional engineering grad students take? what are the coursework requirements?

is the media lab cool with students who only intend to complete a masters degree?

what are some other highly-interdisciplinary programs like mit medialab? any that are a bit less competitive, and any on the west coast? i highly favor these programs since i love variety and research focused on potential positive impact to society…don’t really like conducting basic research.

Congrats!! we are now in same boat!
btw did they cite “lack of funds” as a reason coz there was no specific mention in my letter.
To quote from my letter. the line said that
" It is not possible for us to accept every qualified applicants at this time"

Also i didn’t get any email from my professor.
However when i recently mailed him asking whether there have been cases of waitlisted students getting admitted in past few years.
He replied that there have been such cases as ppl apply to more than one place.
So there is HOPE.
And i guess like Obama we can live on the Audacity of Hope till the final decision!

sent by postal mail which means international student should expect few more days
before they get it.
I cant understand rationale behind sending rejects by postal mail.

Waitlisted! I guess they did it to a lot of people. No idea when other people might receive their letters - I live just a few miles away from MIT, and it took 7 days from the postmark to get here.

@lxt
Congratulation now you are with me and hiy.
which group did you apply for? + its funny they didn’t send you an email.
i haven’t received postal letter yet. (i live on other side of earth) :D

Regarding Media Labs funding model:
Given media labs unique model of funding and sponsorship from businesses rather than NSF, APRA, DAPRA, NIH makes it difficult for them to get money in worst recession since great depression.
Also last time when dot com boom went burst, MIT Media Lab was in trouble as well, there were talks of splitting it into three different centers and even closing it down. Also Nicholas Negropronte (former Media Lab director and Founder) even indicated that students might not be fully supported.
However economy revived and Media lab survived. (Thank God!!)
Thus i wont be amazed if they are having a fund crunch this time again.
Now the problem is that if they take less students then it translates into lower number of projects. Which means less number of achievements to show to industry to ask for funds.
Unlike other universities which are set to gain from Obama’s(or bernake? or even bush?) 800 Billion dollar bailout, media lab wont gain much from it, as very few groups work on NSF, NIH funding. Except i guess affective computing which might get some money due to its research on autism.

aaahh people are still getting waitlisted … I willl wait for my letter to arrive … Why aint a single international admit till now ???
Atleast they must notify Rejects first rather than tantalizing people and jerking them offff

“”"
Why aint a single international admit till now ???
“”"
i guess media lab takes only 20~30 new (masters) students, rest are for phd who have masters from media lab. There is no direct admission to PhD.
Thus number of international accepted students are very few at most 10.
So there is very low probability that one of them is on this community or grad cafe.
when you get an admit you are less inclined to post. :)
A friend of mine who got MIT PhD Chem engg this year didnt post. Though he used to go to gradcafe everyday.

DS’s undergrad advisor, mentor, and now employer, told me at DS’s graduation, that she wished DS the best in his graduate study pursuit. She (advisor) said that she got her pHd from MIT, but she went to MIT for all of the Usual and Wrong reasons. She said that she hoped that DS chose his grad school for the best reasons.

She did not tell me nor did I ask; What are the wrong and correct reasons?
