MIT or Haverford

<p>I have been accepted to both of these colleges, and am in completely ambivalent position. I applied to MIT (MIT was my first choice) considering that it has an outstanding research opportunity for undergraduate students; but after watching videos of some MIT classes through Open-course-ware, I found that the interaction between students and faculty is virtually zero. It seems like a seminar or…. </p>

<p>Im interested in physics. How is Haverford physics department compared to MIT?
Help me</p>

<p>Also accepted to Swarthmore and Williams (early write), but Haverford and MIT are my top two choices.</p>

<p>its like that everywhere, if you are not impressed by the depth of instruction of the MIT professors on open courseware, i was, especially with EM physics, then u will be dissapointed by the instruction anywhere. I would goto MIT.</p>

<p>Don't rule out Swarthmore! Spend a little time looking back at the Swat threads and you will find it is an amazing place. I met several of the physics faculty during Parents Week-end, at all places - the Crum Regatta! And visited the physics research labs during our tour of the science center. Swat is bigger than Haverford, has more resources, a wonderful sense of community, and may fit your needs better than either Haverford or MIT.</p>

<p>You should take a very long hard look at the Williams physics dept. Unless there's something else about the school you don't like, it's very tough to top in that field for undergraduate studies. Check out this thread from a couple of weeks ago.

<p>Haverford would give you a lot more student/faculty interaction. If that's what you want, I would go there. The education is still excellent.</p>

<p>I'd choose Haverford over MIT for that very reason. They're both great schools and you obviously can't go wrong either way</p>

<p>Yes you can!!!!! Choosing Haverfort over <strong><em>M-I-T</em></strong> may well be the dumbest thing you can EVER do in your whole freaking life. MIT is much, much much better than Haverfart.</p>

<p>Not everything is about prestige here. If you know anything about Haverford, you would know that it is a fantastic, academically rigorous college.</p>

<p>Although the student-teacher interaction may not be as good at MIT, MIT is definitely better academically. If you're planning may do engineering (if you were to change your major from physics), then go to MIT.</p>

<p>Yes, MIT is academically better, but it depends on what you want in a college. If close relations with the faculty are important, Haverford is probably a better choice. It's dependant on the individual</p>

<p>i dont know why you would post online. these schools have such ridiculously different atmospheres that the "perfect" place for you should be obvious when you visit. (i hope you visited)</p>

<p>P.S. if it were me, id take Haverford, and thats just cuz of who i am, not because of any academic difference (which is marginal).</p>

<p>The academic differences are incredible. MIT is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, research institution in the entire world.</p>

<p>One the same note, students there are generally unhappy. </p>

<p>Go with where you think you would be happiest.</p>

<p>I'm the same way college2332. Even though I'm a prospective engineering student, I'm not a techie (does that make sense?). I think the whole MIT environment is not what I'd be after.</p>

<p>Redbull298: I never said that Haverford is a bad school. But, in fields related to science/engineering, no school comes close to MIT; that's an undeniable fact - as fids pointed out.</p>
