Should I go to MIT or University of Illinois Urbana Champaign for civil engineering?? UIUC is higher ranked than MIT for civil engineering but MIT is more prestigious and a better overall engineering university.what do you guys think???

go to MIT..

can you please elaborate...

At first glance, I'd say MIT but for undergrad engineering, I think you should go to the school where you're getting more money...also both schools have a different atmosphere, UIUC is in the cornfields and MIT is in cambridge/boston

what about if money was no object??

just do it. plus boston is amazing

be more convincing :)

i am in no way downplaying UIUC. i understand that it has a very strong engineering program and is ranked pretty high in that particular field. But overall, MIT is just too good to look over. In case you decide to switch majors, MIT will be good for any type of engineering you decide to pursue. I don't know about UIUC, but I also know MIT is one of the hardest schools to get into. Just being among such a selective and special class would also be a strong incentive for me to go. did i mention boston is amazing?

no i think you forgot to mention it earlier...

What are your financial aid offers from the two schools? I'd honestly pick the cheaper one.

umm...go to MIT...way more prestigious, better atmosphere, better way of life.

I would go to MIT even if it cost a bit more.

I wouldn't necessarily say MIT has a better atmosphere. Everyone that goes to UIUC loves it. It just depends on what you want.
Both are amazing schools. One is more prestigious. One has 40,000 kids. There is always something to do. One is in the city. One is close to the city.

UIUC has an awesome civil engineering program.

2008 USNWR undergrad Civil Engineering rankings:
1 U. of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign ***
1 University of California–Berkeley *
**3 Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
4 Stanford University (CA)
5 Georgia Institute of Technology *
6 University of Texas–Austin *
7 University of Michigan–Ann Arbor *

MIT is definitely more prestigious overall. However, you'll get a great education if you go to UIUC as well. IF you're in-state for UIUC, and it's much cheaper for you than MIT, I'd choose UIUC. IF MIT is only slightly more expensive, it may be worth the premium.

Keep in mind future goals. If you know you want to work as an engineer, choosing the least expensive program is wiser because you're not going to get much of a salary premium graduating from MIT over UIUC.

If you're unsure of future career goals and you may want to work in consulting, finance, or engineering research, the degree from MIT will give you some advantages over the UIUC degree. But, I would not spend $20k/year or more premium for MIT.

If money doesn't matter, go to MIT.

I'd lean more towards MIT because of location.

What state are you from? If you're from NY then MIT since out of state tuition at UIUC is horrendous. If you're from IL then UIUC. Other factors include what others have mentioned, either way you're going to get your butt kicked since both programs are top tier.

If money is no object, go to MIT, just because it's a unique experience with unique opportunities. If money is an issue, I'd be much less likely to opt for MIT.

However, don't go to MIT just because it is more prestigious or whatever. If you really want, for whatever reason, to go to UIUC, go there. MIT has no magic that you can't get at another good engineering program.

If you got accepted to MIT then you are probably very intelligent and will want to be around smarter kids than those that will be at other colleges....
