My daughter is currently a high school junior. We will be visiting the Boston area end of March and plan to visit MIT. She is seriously considering MIT. We plan to go through the campus tour and meet with EECS staff afterwards. She is also interested in BE but we have not received any response from this department.

I would really appreciate if anyone has any suggestions about things to do and/or find out during this visit. If someone on campus would be kind enough to show us around outside of the standard tour we would be very grateful. We have the whole day set aside for MIT.

Contact the admissions office as they can probably refer you to a student. My daughter did the overnight where she stayed in one of the dorms. I assume that the admissions office maintains a list of volunteer students that might be willing to let your daughter tag along for a class or two, or eat a meal in the dining hall. They do require a consent slip and medical release for the overnight, so they might request something similar for a "tag along" tour.

My daughter won't be on campus spring break, but she would have loved to have shown your daughter around. I suggest you email the undergraduate bloggers on the MIT website with your question, because they can forward the request through Facebook and there's a chance someone who will be on the campus could read it. If all else fails, however, the EECS staff are awesome. You could also phone an admin in the BE department and ask if that department could contact majors to see if anyone will be around. We found the physics department to be extremely responsive and helpful -- best of luck!

Actually, BE has an webpage whereby you could request a tour and/or meet with a faculty. We did that about 3 weeks back. No response. Then, I thought I would call some one in BE so went to their department website. Again, it is not clear who the Adm. Asst. for the department is. The EECS website however was very clear. Was able to connect with the right person right away.

Maybe your daughter has a friend who will be around during spring break or is from Boston. Don't want to impose but only if it is possible.

I do believe there are still tours. Unfortunately you will miss the classes, but you can find video lectures at Free Online Course Materials | MIT OpenCourseWare for that. Either do the guided tour or do it self-guided. There is plenty to see and do, even on Spring break :)
