I feel like most people who fit in at one would be at least reasonably happy at the other. I attended both preview weekends and preferred Caltech to MIT, but chose MIT for financial aid reasons. I still feel like I’m more of a Caltech person than an MIT person, and somewhat regret not going there despite the cost, but I’ve greatly enjoyed my time so far at MIT.

I wonder what the purpose is of the question, and I agree with what jessie said here:
I think there’s a more or less friendly rivalry, but if you’re a prospective student (sorry, don’t know your history) you will find that a lot of students were accepted by both schools and chose one over the other for individual reasons.

S was focused on going to Caltech all through high school, was accepted by Caltech, MIT and other great schools, chose MIT and has never regretted it. I’m sure there are some Caltech students who tell similar stories based on their decisions!

CAMPUS:

MIT: win, CALTECH: epic fail (where’s the campus?)

WEATHER:

MIT: fail, CALTECH: i’m jealous

PHYSICS REQUIREMENT

MIT: doable, CALTECH: i would have died

SURROUNDING AREA

MIT: boston:love!, CALTECH: boooooring

HUMANITIES

MIT: great!, CALTECH: non-existent

NEIGHBORS:

MIT: BU, Wellesley, Harvard, BC…etc. etc., CALTECH: pasadena city college.

NEIGHBORING CITIES:

NYC >>>>> LA

ALSO:

HACKS >>>>> “pranks” (wth?)

Basically this sums up why I chose MIT over Caltech. : P (they do have a great cafeteria with GOOD SUSHI though. so much better than the crap sushi we have at MIT, that’s +100 points lol)

^ Caltech’s latest paper had an article about their failed MIT hack, which they sounded oddly proud about. It was also instigated by the Vice President of student life at their school, and there is an official Prank Club.

Thanks everyone. I am actually a student at Caltech and I didn’t apply to MIT. That’s partly why I am curious about it. This thread definitely helps a lot for those prospective students who also have similar questions. I do enjoy my life here at Pasadena by the way (and the Physics here is NOT that scary… trust me… totally doable…)
