I read somewhere that your whole application should be "united," for if one aspect of it seems inconsistent, then you may be suspected of plagiarizing.

I was planning to have a mix of humorous and serious essays, where my personal statement (Common App) would mainly be humorous, and my activities essay (Common App) would mainly be serious, and that pattern would translate to the college supplements as well.

Would this be a good idea, having both humorous and serious types of essays? (ex. where half of the essays are serious and the other half are not, or 75% of the essays would be serious, and the 25% would not)

Thanks!

I say go for it. It won’t look like plagiarizing because everybody has their own writing style and more specifically, diction, whether or not it is humorous. Just make sure it is humor that multiple admissions officers would appreciate.

In my opinion, it’s either a hit or a miss with a funny essay. It could score you big points if it works out, but if they don’t find it amusing it could greatly cost you.

But bottom line, I seriously doubt you would be accused of plagiarizing.

If you feel like you can write about a topic humorously, do so. If you don’t, don’t.

Don’t worry about being suspected of plagiarism unless you plagiarized. Adcoms know that not everyone jokes around in every circumstance.
