Mixing with Haverford and Swarthmore

I was wondering how much of an interaction BMC students generally have with the Haverford and Swarthmore students outside of class… are they on campus like all the time so you can’t even tell who’s from where, or is it basically each to his/her own?

As far as I know, Swarthmore students interact more with Haverford students, and not so much Bryn Mawr, because Swarthmore and Haverford are closer to each other. Because Swarthmore has so many courses, students here tend not to go to the other colleges, as much as students from the other colleges come here. I don't know anybody who takes courses in other colleges; there are probably only very few in all three colleges. It's just a convenience. The library system is great, too; I can check out books from Haverford or Bryn Mawr if I wanted to.

There's quite a bit of interaction between Bryn Mawr and Haverford but less between Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore (and to the best of my knowledge, also Haverford and Swarthmore).

Besides the academic exchange with Haverford, we have Bi-Co clubs, Bi-Co sport teams and an active Bi-Co housing exchange. We can get key-card access to all Haverford buildings that we have a legitimate reason to be in, and we can swipe into Haverford's dining hall just like we would swipe into ours. There are two full-sized buses running between the two colleges several times and hour, and they are even more crowded at night than during the day!

There is less interaction between the Bi-Co and Swarthmore though. The main factors might be the distance and a lack of transportation options. Bryn Mawr and Haverford are just 5 minutes away from each other, but Swarthmore is about 40 minutes from Bryn Mawr (or 35 from Haverford). Transportation to and from Swarthmore is an issue because the shuttle seats only about 10 students and runs only once every 90 or so minutes. Some students go to Swarthmore to party, but that's about the extend of our relationship.

In reply to dchow08's post I would like to mention that there are about 3,000 cross-registrations between Bryn Mawr and Haverford every year, but less than 100 cross-registrations between the Bi-Co and Swarthmore. Hence I am not surprised that the Tri-Co appears to be nothing but hot air to a Swarthmore student.

If you want to have contact within the Tri-Co, then you can have it. I know some people who stay at BMC almost all the time, and I know others who have groups of friends at other colleges and spend a lot of time there. Everyone in my room is taking a class at another college next year- three of us are taking at least one class at Hav and one is taking a class at UPenn.

And, yeah, most of my Swattie friends stay at Swarthmore- more than I stay at Bryn Mawr. I've been to Philly tons of times, and know my way around all three campuses, but many of my friends have only been to Philly once or twice and a lot have never even seen BMC or Hav. I'd say part of that is the more isolated location and part is the work (or attitude towards work- in the case of some people I know).

Thanks brillar and b@r!um, you guys were helpful. I see that it's basically there if you want it, and if you don't it's not essential to your college experience and you can have fun without it.

hey man, who cares about checking out books. the tri-co setup is there mainly for hooking up (at least for me.) the chicks are hot at bmc.i can imagine that after spending the whole week at the convent, coming to swat on the weekends must feel like escaping a supermax. bmc students won't get much action at hc, they have an honor code to live by.

yeah. It's unfortunate but swatties affectionately call the tri-co van the **** truck. Sad, but true.

Yeah, I was going to say essentially what the last few posters said: BMC-Swarthmore interactions are largely limited to hook-ups. Very few Swatties go to Bryn Mawr or Haverford for classes but I do know of a few Bryn Mawr students in friends' courses and seminars this and last semester.
Mostly, it's just Swarthmore-Bryn Mawr hook ups. I don't think I've ever met a Haverford student on Swat's campus for any reason (though I'm sure there have been some, they're just less common than Bryn Mawr ladies, it seems).
