Model UN Paper

I have my first conference next month, and my position paper is due THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!! My country is Belgium and my committee is World Trade Organization. I've got some info about Belgium, and some about WTO, but not much overlap. I dont know how to go about this, how to interpret all my data i've accumulated, I am just baffled. Can anyone help me, please. And soon preferably. Haha. Thanks in advance.

You need to research Belgium's position on your topic -- your sponsor/advisor should give you a list of the topics that the conference is going to discuss -- and that's the subject of your position paper. For a more wealthy country like Belgium, the mebassy sites can be incredibly helpful. Do a google search for Belgium + embassy and see if the sites give you articles/speeches on Belgium's position. Some are good (France's is a godsend) and some are not. If tht doesn't work, try newspapers like The Economist and the New York Times, ask your teacher if they have any clippings, do a google search for Belgium + your topic, etc.

And if all else fails, find out your country's bloc (Belgium's would be the EU/European bloc) and base your positions off of that.

If you haven't received a topic from your sponsor (which was the impression I got from your post), google the conference name - they should have a listing on the website.

(Incidentally, I'm putting off a background paper on Estonia right now... ;) )

GreenDayFan, where's your conference? I have one next month too.

We live Same State.

The format of the paper actually depends on the conference. I've had some that require one paper per topic and some that demanded one paper per representative.

I am going to conference at Brown University

Anyone going to SSUNS in Montreal in November? Cause I am!

Okay...so I need to find out how Belgium feels about Tariff Wars, American Rice in Seoul (?), and the accession of Russia to WTO....i have an idea about topic 1&3, but the rice one im stuck....whenever i google i just get random irrelevant stuff that's no help. Can anyone help? Also, I'm not sure about the solution...

Actually the topics are Tariff Wars, Rice Cultivation and Consumption, and Accession of Russia.....

Start off with the CIA world factbook. Use wikipedia.com and history/geography databases to get a better idea of what the country is like, and then go to the UN website and look for past resolutions on the topics (though I suspect you'll have a hard time with the rice one). Look up countries you can ally with once you know your stance. With the rice one, dig to find your country's stake in the issue; for example, I'm representing the Phillipines and have to discuss disease in Africa, which doesn't really affect me until you look at the similar climates, which makes spreading in the jungle extremely possible. If your country is totally unreleated, try to come up with an innovative solution to the rice thing, or if nothing else ally with someone who's got a good stake in it and help sponsor their resolution.

(Sorry if I'm telling you things you already know, couldn't get a good idea of what you did...)

I think im good now...i had my dad explain to me the topics and how each country felt....i feel much better now..now i just need to research s few small details and i should be set to write my paper....
