Mom of a junior, any SAT prep advise?

Hello, I’m looking for any advise in prepping my junior for SAT / ACT tests. Thanks in advance!!

Has your student taken the PSAT previously, in either sophomore or freshman year? If so, use the results report from the College Board website to help focus on areas that need more prep. With the PSAT redesign I’m not sure, but your student may be able to get personalized prep from Khan Academy (linked through the College Board account). Even if your student doesn’t have that link, Khan Academy is a good resource for online test prep and it’s free.

I’d advise having your student prep carefully and take the PSAT in October. The test is good practice for the SAT and junior year PSAT is the only way to enter the National Merit scholarship competition, which can result in great scholarship opportunities at many good colleges. If your student doesn’t do well on the PSAT, no harm done because colleges don’t even look at that for admissions.

Check with your school to see what test prep options are available through the school district. Some offer free or very reasonably priced in-person prep classes. If online would work better there are many choices, but starting with the free Khan Academy won’t hurt.

@momasking2017 is your kid a rising junior? public or private school? What, if any, tests has your child taken thus far? The best advice is practice, practice, practice. It is like anything demanding: the more you do it the better you will be. The big hurdle for many kids is content mastery. If you have not had certain subjects it can be hard to learn material just for the test. This is particularly true about math. Reading comprehension is also something that can be developed: reading information dense passages and teasing out the answer to the question. In our experience the SAT is better for a kid strong in math who is a good problem solver and critical thinker: the ACT is more straightforward material but much faster. I suggest a practice tests of each --cold–to get a baseline and use that as your starting point.
