Montclair State Musical Theatre?

You are right Break into Song, it is confusing, and they also confirmed that the info was an error when I called, you are not invited, you just call to choose an audtiion date. I guess calling is key to this operation :-)!

Ah, thanks I figured. I still have to figure out which audition date I'll be attending.

This is just my insight on Montclair:

I visited the school's 'Theater Day' program last friday. We got there, and instead of being able to take two workshops (which we were told) the Dean of the theater department talked to us and answered questions. He made it seem like the school had lots of connections and that it was a really solid program. He mentioned that unlike the Tisch and Rutgers programs that don't allow you to see the stage your freshman year, Montclair allows you to audition for productions in your second semester of your freshman year. The workshop I took was musical theater singing. It was disappointing because the instructor, Eric Diamond, who I believe is in charge of theater, basically said "Who wants to sing a song? I'll see if I can play it." Which resulted in a bunch of teenagers singing horribly flat in front of everyone. Either way, I didn't let that soil my opinion of the school. I mean, just because the workshop was awful doesn't mean the program is. The whole campus was very pretty and the train station is right there at the end of campus. There are many performance spaces and facilities (I only got to see a few, I wanted to see the 1000 seat Memorial Theater!) The Kasser theater is a gorgeous 500 seat theater that is relatively new. We saw a play there which was pretty racy and explicit... which kind of turned my parents off but the performances by the young actors were phenomenal in my opinion. I was impressed by the work these undergrads had done/will have done before they graduate. Overall, I am really considering going there if I get accepted. :)

Anyone going to audition at MSU on Jan 20th?

Hi Tashmu, My D will be there!

Maybe we'll meet up! I sent you a pm.

My D will be there too!

Oooh, good a hen party! I' ve sent you a pm, too.

could anyone give some feedback on how the audition went? My D will audition there shortly. Also do you know of any hotels close by?

RGlick
When we visit NYC, we always stay at a Best Western in Fairfield NJ which is within 10 minutes of the campus I think. The price is great and the hotel is fine and a very nice hot breakfast is included. The same owners apparently also now own the Hampton Inn which is right down the street, but we have never stayed there. I think it runs a bit more expensive, but not too bad. They are both on Route 46 in Fairfield and easy to book online through the websites. Hope that helps!

You can pm me w/ specific questions and I can ask my d and get back to you. It was approximately a 3 hour audition, not counting getting there an hour early. It is a little hard to find, but it is across from the new Starbux- like Cafe Diem, so give yourself some extra time to get there.
Plenty of rooms and time to change and warm up. Some had dance first, some had vocal/monologue first. Dance was long with a ballet warm-up, almost an hour. People looked sweaty afterward, so bear that in mind. My d. wished she'd eaten more, as she didn't expect it to last so long, and hers began after lunch hour.
All had a brief 5" written test on music theory for placement purposes, that everyone I overheard thought was difficult.
My d and others complained that the accompanist was too slow. Another student appeared to benefit from this by asking him to speed up, especially for the up-tempo. Overall the atmosphere was casual, people were friendly, it appeared well-organized, and ran 15-30 minutes late by the end of the day.
Good luck!

I'm curious as to how one gets to the campus or near enough to get there by a reasonably priced taxi ride from Midtown. I know that both buses and trains run directly to the campus from Port Authority and Penn Station. However this service doesn't seem avaliable on the weekend for some reason. I do have a friend who went to the school and lives nearby so she could probably give me a ride from Newark or something if it comes down to it...but I want that to be a last resort kind of thing.

So, is it possible to get public transportation to the campus (or within walking distance) on the weekend from NYC?

The Montclair Heights station is at the beginning of the campus. Idk if that runs on weekends. We took a cab to Newark from MSU which runs about 40$

Bumping for sarahlsmom

What time do the MT auditions start? I'm leaning towards 9am...which means I'll get there at around 8am. But I just want to make sure.

Hi Breakintosong, I think they give you an appointed time, early morning or later in the morning. My D's was at 10 am. Enjoy yourself!

Will anyone be at theater day March 2? My D will be there, and we are going in still not knowing much about the program, so she is excited. and, Ericsmom, thanks for "bumping" this!

My D is finishing her junior year. Faculty have been very supportive and helpful, and I get the sense that there is real "energy" generated both in class and performance rehearsals. She has loved the program (less than enthralled with New Jersey). Cabaret, the current musical, is incredible -- the choreography was truly outstanding. (D isn't in this, so I feel I can be at least a little objective). Students waiting in line were warm, pleasant and welcoming to me (I was there alone) and we had that same experience with current students when D went for her audition. We heard VERY quickly about their admission decision, which was also a plus.

Hi...I was wondering if anyone knows a bit about Dance at MSU? My daughter has auditioned for Dance in many highly competitive schools...where they take about 20 kids out of hundreds. We were curious to know about how many apply to Montclair for Dance and how many get accepted....We were informed that audition is king for acceptance...she auditions March 20th......Thank you anybody

I can't give you any specific facts, but I do know that it is not super easy to get into and that they have a good dance program. Of course, I've heard this from a friend who has a niece who attends the program!
