Montclair State Musical Theatre?

I’m pulling this out from another thread because I have several students interested in this new program - anyone have any info? I may take a few to visit, and if so, I’ll report back - but any prior info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!!

I know of two girls who are going to be Freshmen in the class this year...if I hear anything from them, I'll be happy to pass it along. Both girls live within 20 minutes of the school. I know that the school is selective, but the girls I know who are going didn't audition (as far as I know) at any of the "big" schools, so I can't really compare how selective the school actually is. (If that makes any sense, at all!)

It did make perfect sense, and thanks to you and chrism for the info! ; )

I'm a high school senior looking into Montclair as well as several of the "big" schools. Does anyone know the basic stats like acceptance rates or what their ciriculum is like?

much appreciated

Montclair

It's been a while since I've seen anything specific posted on this school's program. Just recently a couple of my son's teachers brought it to his attention, partially because it's in NJ where we are, although still about 2 hours away. We spoke w/ them on the phone recently and we found them very friendly and helpful. Has anyone out there seen a recent production or at least know the history/ experience of someone who might be attending there? I know some folks mention that the school appears to empty out quite a bit on weekends. Wondering if this is actually accurate or is there a difference w/ in the theatre department? It may be quite some time before we get a chance to visit, so any guidance now would be appreciated.

Carnivorousplant - we were actually told that numbers are not such a critical issue as at some other schools. They don't have a preset limit for their incoming class. It really appears to depend on the quality of those auditioning and what they view they can do for those students w/in their program. I hope I read them correctly, but I believe that's the gist of it. I do know they have an open house the 4th of next weekend.

Can We Add New Schools To Thsi Forum Like Montclair Stae, Muhlenberg, & Wagner. Does Anybody Know About The Theatre There?

Montclair State just restructured their MT program, I believe. It seemed to be an interesting program since you could focus on your strenghts/weaknesses-amore personalized program. My d was looking into that school. We actually visited the campus..nice and their theater is new-very nice. Unfortunately, it was the during the semester break, so nobody was there. The campus is very close to the theater district!!! (Always a plus, right?) Muhlenberg's theater program has always been highly thought of. I beleive they just started a MT program. We also have seen Muhlenberg..(we live in the area of both of these schools). We know of kids who have/are attending Muhelnberg and they really seem to enjoy it. I do not know too much about Wagner. I have heard of some talented vocal students going there, but that is about it. Sorry, seems like I am not too much help for you! Montclair is the school we investigated the most! You are right...these schools do deserve to be mentioned on this site! Best of luck on your search!

Elvis,
CC has chosen to limit the individual musical theater college forums to 30 BFA programs. However, the MT Forum does discuss and very much welcomes discussions and individual threads on colleges such as Wagner, Muhlenberg, and Montclair State. First, do a search to see if there are already threads on any of these schools. If so, please post on those so we don't create duplicate threads. If not, start a new thread for each school you wish to discuss.

Wagner and Muhlenberg have come up on the MT Forum in the past. I know both are very good programs, particularly for those not doing a BFA degree. Wagner's is by audition and Muhlenberg's is an optional audition. I am not as familiar with Montclair State but imagine if you start a thread on it, someone will be able to help you.

I Have Just Merged This New Thread Today With An Existing Thread On Montclair State. The New Thread Starts On Post #7 As The Posts Get Put Into Chronological Order. We Prefer To Just Have One Thread On Each School When Possible.

Elvispretzle,

I posted this same note on the Wagner thread. We've visited all three schools since we're in South Jersey. Montclair is the only BFA program in theatre w/ a concentration in M/T, audition required. Wagner is a BA in theatre w/ concentration in M/T, audition required Muhlenberg is a BA in theatre, audition required only for a talent scholarship. As w/ all schools, they each have their pros and cons. We know the most about Montclair. I'd be happy to give more info if you want to pm or email me. I need to refer back to some literature. Good luck in your
search!

Hi, my first post on these boards, though I've been lurking for several months and have gained so much valuable information here, for which I am very grateful.

My son has been accepted into the MT BFA program at Montclair and at one other school so far; we are still waiting to hear from a few others before he gets down to making his final decision. I can try to answer some of the questions you had on Montclair. When he auditioned, several of the parents said they had seen the Parade production in February and thought it was outstanding. They felt it compared favorably with productions they had seen at some of the "big name" schools. You asked about commuters. Montclair is a commuter school by and large, but that is not the case with the theater and MT students. We were told they virtually all live on campus, due to rehearsals, classes, practices, etc.

A nice thing about Montclair is they now have their own NJ Transit train station; the train runs directly into NY's PA station, in about 15 minutes. So, great proximity to the city. I also can tell you that the fellow coordinating the program is new this school year and they hired him away from U of Miami, I believe.

They are holding one more round of MT auditions in April. Requirements were one ballad, one up tempo, two contrasting monologues and a group dance. Also, there was a written music theory test and sight singing, but both of these were for placement only.

I hope this heps. If anyone has any other comments, could I ask that we keep them here on the boards so that we all may benefit? Thanks.

Carnivorusplant - I've been told by the school that this year they accepted
20 out of 300 for MT, They have a great new director and the curriculum
sounds very solid.

I'm curious if anyone can post the full curriculum for the MT BFA majors? They have a link on the website, but I can never access it.

I was curious about the MT BFA so I downloaded the undergrad catalogue (accessible from the webpage you mentioned above) but it doesn't list the Musical Theater concentration under BFA as it's an old version.

I will keep looking.

Anybody know when auditions are?

They're on the website:
Jan. 20
Feb. 24
Mar. 24

Brilliant! I could not find them, anmd when I called, they confirmed that the webpage was inadvertently missing. Thank you.

You're welcome! Yeah for a few weeks their the website was down so they had last semester's page up and displayed the old information. It seems to be up and working now.

By the way for anyone who can answer, on the website it has contrasting information about the auditions. It says that the school will contact us about the audition and it also says that you have to be invited. But is that only for acting and not musical theater? I'm assuming you have to call and schedule the audition?

Just submit your application and then call to get your appointment. They are very nice and helpful, but want the application first.
